Hi all, i just got into the world of photography and i am still checking a few things but i come here to ask you all some advices. :P

First of all the camera that i have it is a Canon 1000D with the standard 18-55 lens.

Now the questions :P

First:
I have a standard 2 Gb SD card but i fell that its a bit slow so i am going to get a Secure Digital Card TRANSCEND 16GB Class 6 the thing is that i don't find any info on if the camera supports a 16 Gb card anyone know? And is this a good card? I am asking if it is a good card because i see from other brands and they are a lot more expensive compared with this one.

Second:
I fell that the standard lens that came with the camera is just not enough so i went to check a few possibilities and i came across with a Sigma lens that seems very good in the reviews and all that and on top of all its not very expensive and that is good for me at the moment  the lens is the Sigma 70-300 MM F4-5,6 DG APO MACRO is this a good lens?

Thanks in advance for all the answers and help :)

1. Yes - Transcend is a fantastic card.

2. 18-55mm lens is good. I would add a Canon 55-250mm IS - it's a great companion for your 18-55.

Yes, a 16GB card will work fine in your camera. Transcend is good, as is SanDisk. Don't go purely on price though, check out reviews on places like Amazon to see what people think about them... price isn't everything

The 18-55 is a great lens, but when you say not enough I don't know if you mean you want extra Reach or the Image Quality isn't good enough. As far as Sigma goes, their image quality is pretty good... but I can't personally recommend them because of focus issues. If you're looking for a Zoom, I think Tamron is the way to go. They have a 70-300 in that range that is quite good for the price.

Hello...

The best place to look for lens information is in the "Lens Sample Photo Archive". It's a sub-forum in the lens section. There are threads for many popular lenses. I would look through the threads for the Sigma, Tamron, and Canon 55-250. See what owners think and have produced with the lenses...

Good luck.

Steve

Highly recommend this lens as well instead of the sigma. The price is very low especially considering the image quality you can get with it. Additionally, the image stabilization really helps especially with longer focal length lenses. If the Sigma you are looking at does not have image stabilization, then you will have to shoot a high shutter speed to minimize camera shake.

Thanks for all the answer so far.

@realmike15: the 18-55 doesn't have enough reach for me the image quality i cant complain tho i still need to buy a uv and polarized filter :P anyway the focus issues that you are referring are they that bad? Because the review i saw from the lens they seem very good, anyway what other lens can you recomend with a macro function? (yes i know its not a pure macro lens but its good to have something :P)

@jase1125 & hieu1004: any other recomendations?

The UV filter serves no actual purpose. Some people think it might protect their lens from something.... but it's just a thin piece of glass. Get a lens hood instead... it does serve a purpose shading the lens from oblique light and will also help protect the lens a bit, while in use.

A circular polarizer filter can be handy for certain types of shooting. It helps cut reflections for one thing. It will also deepen the blue of skies and help clouds stand out. It can be useful making foliage look richer and greener. And can be handy if photographing someone who has shiny/oily skin and/or wears eyeglasses. It's probably the most useful of filters. It's also relatively expensive, to get a good one.

EDIT: I mostly use B+W Kaesemann and MRC. Hoya Pro HMC or SHMC are also good. Heliopan SH-PMC are good. There are some others. You basically want a multi-coated filter that doesn't add any tint and gives a smooth polarizing effect.

I think both the 18-55 and 55-250 both use 52mm filters. That's a fairly small size, so might not be too expensive. Shop around.

what is your price range, one of the best it the BW kaesemann CPL and Tiffen HT, they are pretty expensive. The BW MRC is good as well as the hoya digital pro 1.

For about 30 euro that is very tight for a good 58mm cpl. You will not get a good multi coated on at that price. You can get the hoya blue series single coated in the mid 30 euro range, or hama.

For a good quality one you are looking at the 50 euro range. Here is a good read on cpl's
