I know you say the equipment does not make the photo - but I got to say this new 7D with the 580 EX is making me look a lot better:) These are post Lightroom 3 as well - feel free to comment as I am really trying to get better....

Nice family photos. Exposure wise they are pretty spot on. 5th and 6th are definitely keepers.

Technically, I personally would get rid of the red plants in the background or make them out of focus. I find them a bit distracting.I would be careful to not cut off the hands at the wrists or legs at ankles. In the last photo, the young lady's face is a bit out of focus.

It is hard to self critique family photos as we tend to focus on the subjects (the family members) and miss the other technical aspects of the photos. It happens to me all the time.

Thx seyak - a follow up question....

I shot these in raw and imported them to Lightroom 3 - once you edit them in LR and upload them r they automatically converted to jpg's?

Very nice. #5 (3910) is exceptionally good, I think. For my taste I would crop off the very top of the image since it is almost all black anyway. I think that puts more attention on her face and also moves her face closer to a classic rule-of-thirds position.

I think so. Web browsers can't display RAW images I think. I have never uploaded directly from LR 3.

You need to work on the composition...the exposure looks fine.:D

7D has wireless flash control. Try it. Lots of fun and more interesting than simple bounce on the ceiling.

+1 - exposures look good, color a bit saturated, but composition could be better. Try not to cut parts of people out. And if you do crop someone, crop between joints.

Good suggestion on the remote flash. It works well and adds a real good dimension to your photos. Just set the slave on a shelf or table off to one side and control it thru the 7D flash menu.

I found this site quite helpful with the 7D -Canon Learning Center (external link)
