Canon 1D MKII or 40D to shoot kids sports? Are they close at all, or does the 1D just smoke the 40D? Any upside to the 40 beyond lens selection?

I've got an itch....;)

I made the switch, and never regretted it at all. However, you will make sacrifices in the switch.

The 40D is simpler to use, making changes to both camera settings and menu settings. Still, use a 1D MKII enough and you'll learn to make setting changes quickly. You'll also lose the bigger LCD and Live view with the switch. Furthermore, the 40D has 14-bit files compared to the 1D MKII's 12-bit files, something to consider. You will also be adding a hefty size camera, both in dimension and weight. I do sometimes miss having the smaller body, but not enough to go back.

The 1D MKII's AF is fantastic, and I also find higher ISO captures to be cleaner than my old 40D...noticeably so.

If by any chance you can, try out a 1D MKII and compare yourself...

Good Luck.

40d is a kids toy compared to the 1d ii. But... unless you're shooting serious action (birds in flight, sports), the 1d2 is overkill. The tracking capabilities of the two shouldn't even be compared :D

I have the MKIIn, same as MKII with a slightly larger screen, and I can honestly say the 40D doesn't go out with me when I shoot birds anymore.
Yes the MKII is older, but for sports I wouldn't think twice about going with the MKII.
The upside to the 40D is the 1.6 crop factor.

1D2 will win... 40D has resolution/density on it's side, thats it.

To some, that's not an upside. For birders and sports enthusiasts... definitely. It should also be noted that the APS-H bodies (1d series) cannot accommodate EF-S lenses--that's a bigger plus for going 40d. Can't beat the 18-55mm + 55-250mm combo when it comes to price vs performance.

Had both at one point. My go to camera was always the 1DMKII. The 1D's AF is still top notch for sports.

What are the benefits ofthe IIn over the II? The price difference is pretty hefty.

The original post referred to kids sports, that is why I included that tidbit.
It also made reference to differences beyond lenses which is why I didn't include reference to the S lenses.

Thanks for the quick and decisive replies everyone. Pretty much what I was expecting to hear, but good to have that validated. Now the only question is should I try to buy a 1DMKII right now or wait a bit and see if the feeling passes.

A Slightly larger buffer size, lager LCD screen, some easier functionality and Picture Style. Otherwise, they are both the same.

Shawn, how does your camera selection go for stuff other than birding? Do you use the 40D given it is more convenient and lighter? How much do performance differences factor in when AF speed is not important to you?

Thanks.

What lenses do you have now? Are you missing shots with the 40D? What is the 40D not doing for you right now? Is wild and rampant kids your main photographic subject? What else do you like to shoot?
