Here are a few shots from the JOQ at Snow Summit. This is the J-3 level ages 13-14. Thanks for looking!

Nice stuff. Suggestion - perhaps set exposure for the faces so you can see their expressions and let the snow blow out. Who cares what the snow looks like? Aina' ? :D

I noticed that many of them were dark on the faces. One of the items I need is a powerful flash that I can fill them with and something that will sync to at least 1/1000. But I have not really done any research on flashes.

Maybe you can just adjust the shadows and get the racers front side lightened up. I noticed the sun was at thier backs in the shots, same problem I run into if the sun is out...never seems to be in the right spot.

The more recent Canon flashes will reach up to 1/8000th in high speed sync mode. You might be able to throw a light modifier on one with the zoom max and max power. Grab a battery pack for it and you'd be set. If not I can get my Alienbee B800 to sync to 1/800ths with a MiniTT1 and a FlexTT5. It might be a little to much power and really cumbersome.

Thanks guys... I wonder if there is a flash that will fire fast enough with enough juice that wont kill the bank. Most of the time I only fire off 3 frames so it's not like I spray and pray....

Do you want a speedlight or strobe?

Never used a strobe... I just need to keep things small and light, yet do the job because I ski with my gear in a backpack.

Rent/barrow a 580ex for the weekend. You'd be surprised how much light they can put out. How far away from the subject are you? What shutter speed, iso, and stop are you at when you shoot?

I might try that.. My settings are usually F4 or F5.6, ISO 100-400, and shutter speeds of 1/2500 or faster. The distance differs all the time, but I try to get within 50ft of the skier to stay out of their field of view as much as possible but still get close to the action.

The 580ex would be a great choice! It's very powerful and when in high speed sync mode you can shoot at speeds up to 1/8000.

Here is some really GREAT info on high speed sync:
