i guess technically he's in the clear since he clearly defines what is in the auction...but still!!!

He can't list the box in the "Digital Cameras" category.

really?! i think you're giving a lil too much credit to "categories"...i don't think the category has anything to do with it...now, the "new, never opened" *is* an issue, but other than that, it's spelled out that it is a digital camera box...

i think people jumped at the low bids and and placed a bid before fully reading the auction. then kicked themselves after reading it

just like I see broken L lenses and 1D series cameras listed as "for parts/repair only" and they still sell for several hundred dollars or more. I remember seeing a 70-200 f2.8 L non-IS lens sell a few weeks back. seller stated it was dropped in salt water and it sold for darn near $900 or so.

quick everyone... sell your boxes. I have 2 I can sell - starting price $200 each!

Haha! That's what people make mistake. They just look at the picture and read a small description of the item and bid. If the box goes that high, I might sell mine :)

I bet a majority of people who bid on this didn't even bother reading the whole auction description. I do see though that the bid is actually going down, which makes sense - some bidders, after re-reading the description, are realizing what the auction is for, and consequently retracting their bids.

I bet the item will get so many more bids just before it ends because people, in the auction's last minutes, will only read the title and see the very low price. Most likely, this is what the seller is hoping for. He/she is just asking for the first negative feedback and the item returned, which will likely happen.

Well, yes, the category does have something to do with it:

"Selecting a category that doesn't match the item in order to include details for a different product isn't allowed."

Unless that box has 21.1 megapixel resolution, it's a clear violation of the policy, no matter what the title and disclaimers say. You can list it in a camera accessories category, but not in "Digital Cameras".

@moose10101 - i didn't say categories don't have anything to do with it, just said don't give the category too much credit...i guess you don't peruse ebay much...the categories are not *strict* per se...there are many items that loosely fit categories, and this is one of them...

this makes no sense whatsoever. why would anybody be in a rush to bid when there's still two days left... and if you're buying something this expensive, you should have at least read the entire description to see what you're in for. unbelievable.

That doesn't happen in practice. You know how they say 1/4 people are stupid? It's true.

I've sold things on ebay, and I've had people totally disregard what's stated in the description. It happens so often, that anytime there's anything even REMOTELY negative written about the item being sold, I'll PM the buyer to confirm they read the description... before I'll even ship. Most of the time I end up with the expected "I didn't read the description, please cancel."

These people see a picture and a title, and they bid.

You can retract any bid for pretty much any reason. eBay will ask you to state the reason, but it is easy and very possible. That's why the auction is now at about $300 instead of $600 that was this morning.

There was a $1000 bid and it was retracted this morning (scroll down to the bottom to see retraction history for this item) - I wish people would read the description better:
