I just got a 50mm 1.4 lens and I wanted to try it out. I also was asked to shoot a friend's brother who is here from visiting from the states. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to give it a try. We did some formal stuff then went outside in some dismal wintry conditions but I thought we were able to find some interesting places to shoot in his neighborhood none the less.

I should say before we start this was all shot with OCF in their living room or in the neighborhood.

1. Started in their living room grabbing more formal type stuff. Through up a mottled background and then two OCF one with a snoot for hair light and one camera right in small softbox for main light.

2.

Then we put up a white background to shoot as well.

3. Still somewhat formal with outfits and such. Tried to get him to change his expression he pretty much had just one.

4. This is my friend his older brother. Here I just let the white go gray and took a quick shot of the two of them.

Then we went outside and it was really cold. You could see your breath and the sky was gray. Not the best but I thought we might be able to pull off something. Look for interesting textures in the neighborhood. Found this great door. For a little color.

5. It is actually an old Chinese wooden door.

6. This is by an old broken fountain in the complex

7. Here is where the 1.4 really shines getting rid of the distracting background in this shot.

8. This was one of my favorite for the day as it really showed off the ability of the lens.

I am still having a little bit of trouble with nailing the focus on farther away shots. Seems I always miss it by a little bit when I recompose the shot because of the shallow DOF.

I would love to hear comments and tips on how to nail the focus on the full length shots.

these look great...1,2, and 4 were my favorites. I'm waiting for my 50 1.4 to arrive hopefully on tuesday. I can't wait to upgrade from my nifty.

I was playing again and I still can not get consistent shots when not close using this shallow dof which is best to use ai servo or to use a select focus point etc. Would love to hear others thoughts. I do not have as much trouble with 1.8.

Overall very good, well done.

My only nit pick is the second photo his face looks like too much contrast or direct lighting.

The last photo would even be better if he tilted his head down just slightly so you don't really see up towards his nose.

I see you mentioned about the 50mm and focus further away. You may want to check the focus using a test as I bought a 50mm new and the lens could only focus properly up to say 4 or 5 feet as the distance increase so did the front focus needed a -15 to correct distance photos.

I sent it in three times and canon could not fix it so they gave me another 50mm, after I tested it was the same but only needed -6 to correct distance photos. Sold it the next day with canon service paper so that owner could get warranty if he needed.

Would be nice if canon would release a II version.

Yaamon thanks for your comments. I have not tested it enough to know if it is my shooting technique or the lens yet. So I will have to wait and see. Thanks for telling me though I can test it out and see if that is the case or not.
