Hey folks,

I have an XSi camera as well as a 10D that I am fixing. I really like the weight and feel of the 10D and have been considering upgrading to a 40D. After doing some searching in the Sell section, I noticed a lot of the 40D cameras have had their shutters replaced. So, I went out on Google and saw a lot of the xxD cameras that have had shutter problems. This ranged from the 20D through the 50D series.

My question is this. Is there a problem with the xxD line of cameras and their shutters? If so, is it more common with earlier production runs of the cameras or all through the production?

Thanks in advance...
Al

How many is alot? I have been on POTN for years, and have only seen a few posts related to shutter replacement, and quite honestly, seem to remember that it strikes about any of the Canon bodies eventually, not restricted to the xxD. Out of hundreds of thousands of xxD sales, even if I could find 100-200 search results for xxD shutter replacements, that would be tiny.

I've owned 5 different 40D's.
#1--error99 right out of the box--first production run
#2--warranty replacement--sold on craigslist with just under 100k
#3--56k currently
#4--22k
#5--1.4k

Failure rate seems to follow a similar pattern to most devices--if it doesn't give you problems right away they go for a long time.

nope - there's a problem with anything mechanical (in that it'll break eventually!) but there isn't anything enherently wrong with xxD shutters.

The D30/D60/10D has a shutter that isn't "rated" as high as the later shutters, but in reality all these numbers are just statistics of failures at various shutter counts.

If you look at newer cameras of any manufacturer you'll find folks that have had shutter failures. They can break at 500 cycles, they can break at 5,000 cycles...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

My 1st 10D had over 40K shots when the shutter went. Funny thing was, it went on my first outing with that 10D and the refurbed 10D I had just purchased. That refurbed 10D is way past 45K shots now. (still think the older 10D was jealous I bought the 2nd one and was trying to teach me a lesson  )

if you search for broken 40d shutters on google, then all you will find is stuff about broken 40d shutters...the one problem with that is its not showing you all the 40d that havnt broke...but you are safe to assume that if you buy one it will last you.

Thanks for all the info folks.

I am going to be trying my sister-in-law's 40D next week to make sure it is the camera for me. I like the idea of the 50D with the higher resolution LCD, micro-adjust focusing and higher pixel count, but the cost will probably put that one out of my range for quite a while.

I've been playing around with the 40D for a couple of days now. I am really leaning towards my XSi camera. The 40D is a great camera, but it is considerably heavier than the XSi. Also I am not really fond of the control layout compared to the XSi. I do like the larger body of the 40D, feels better in the hands, but the added weight and control layout kind of overrides the feel.

OK,, a few weeks back I visited my old mates at the newspaper I used to work at.. I resigned in mid 2007..

I was issued with a 20D as a backup in 2005 which became my workhorse over a 1D MkII (another story).. When I left, the 20D would have had around 150,000 exposures through it..

As of now, it is still in circulation, as a general backup for when cameras go in for a service etc.. It gets bounced around from photographer to photographer and is also loned to the advertising department.. I'd say, the shutter count has probably doubled..

Funnily, I asked my old boss about this camera.. His words were,, "We can't kill it with a piece of 4x2"..

I have since bought a 20D (2nd hand) before I bought my 50D two years ago.. It is my backup, I often use it in tandem with my 50D.. I'd hate to think how many exposures have gone through it.. It works faultlessly..

You mean to say that the shutter did not self destruct at 50,001 clicks....

I don't trust Canon's shutter ratings (especially for the 1D...for every 1D that makes it past the advertised rating, there are 10 that fail far short of it)...

however...in the xxD line, I've owned a 10D, a 20D and two 30Ds and never had a shutter fail on me...though, to be perfectly fair, only the 10D and the 20D were likely to be truly high mileage...my 30Ds were creampuffs haha

The shutter on my 30D had to be replaced after 2 1/2 years (probably 40,000 - 50,000 shots).
