One more shot of my Peace Rose. I think this is a better photo than the last one I submitted. It looks like I actually got the focus on the Rose and not the leaves this time. No rocks or stepping stones to distract from the Rose. Tell me how I can improve.

Here's a recommendation that I picked up from Rob Sheppard's "Nature and Photography" blog. He suggested that you may get more interesting pictures of flowers by getting down on their level to shoot, or perhaps even lower and shooting upward. That makes for a much more interesting image than the standard "straight down from above" picture that so many people take.

Here's a link to Rob's blog, which I think (based on your pictures) that you will enjoy:

The particular article that I'm recalling was several months ago and I haven't been able to find it again yet. If I do, I'll post a link. Anyone interested in nature photography would find it well worth taking a couple of hours to go through Rob's archives. Lots of good, inspiring stuff there!

OK, I found his older stuff. Rob reorganized his blog a while back and didn't carry everything over:

I think the second page has the articles that I'm recalling:

Plenty of reading material there. Rob is a great resource for nature photographers.

Lovely rose, nice and sharp. However, as a consequence the b/g is a little too visible. The rose is a simple mask in photoshop and the background can be darkened to make the focus solely on the bloom.

It feels slightly overexposed...this can be fixed in edit, or watching your histogram when cllicking the shutter button;)

I did some editing in Photoshop Elements 7.0. I darkened the background a little and blurred it a little more too. Does this version look better?

Just me, but although the BG is better, the flower looks a tad too sharp now?

Alot of editing for a photo:D Histogram lets you know while you are taking the shot..Bob Lay, a member here, is a huge proponent of that, and he taught me that.

Nice rose (winter here) and process...I agree with corkneyfonz but would darken the background more but first I would crop more off the bottom leaving about as much space as on the left. Might even try a circular vignette (black)

Thanks for all the wonderful CC on this photo. I did blur the background more and darkened it some too but not enough I don't think. I also sharpened it a little bit too much as Flo mentioned. As far as getting down lower for the shot, this garden is filled with flowers in the Summer so that doesn't leave me much room to work with. I was trying to capture the beautiful colors in this bloom is why I shot from above. Everyone here has been wonderful about helping this newcomer learn how to improve my photos. I appreciate the effort so much.

Just wondering, how would the flower look at say f2.8 or lower apperture. What apperture did you use in above pics.
