When I do "convert and save" to JPEG, the sharpness isn't being retained

Any suggestions, advice?

Much appreciated!

Compare the Raw and unresized jpg at 100% view, then report back.

An observation that may or may not be relevant: When you sharpen a RAW to (for example) 5, convert and save to JPG, then open the JPG in DPP, the tool palette won't show sharpness 5 (or, rather, the JPG equivalent), it will show sharpness 0 even though it retains the sharpness you set in the RAW.

All I can offer at this point is that this is the third question of the same nature in as many days. Something strange must be going on for so many people with different cameras and computers to be having the same problem with DPP.

For starters, which version of DPP are you using? Do you have a way to post a RAW file where others can download it to see if we can duplicate the problem?

Thanks!

Rimmer -
If you had been around here for a while longer you would know that this is a complaint that has been posted at almost the same frequency for many years (as I'm sure René and Tony L. will confirm.) Most times it is because the jpg is being viewed in an application that destroys sharpness and/or reduces contrast when downsizing its display data to "fit to screen".

I am just doing "convert and save" and then opening in Lightroom or PS5

It didn't used to do this until just recently

I can't post a RAW file on here to show the comparison

So, let's back up and ask again: first, try this -- do a full size full quality jpeg convert and save, and then open both the Raw file and the jpeg in the DPP Edit window (double-cllick each one in the browser to open two separate windows. Then move the windows to either side so you can actually see a good portion of the image (you may need to close the little "toolbox". Double-click each image to enlarge it to 100% and then slide the images apart to each show a portion of the image that has good detail that you can see in each window simultaneously to compare.

If you see a noticeable difference, if you could get a screen capture of that small area from each then post them here for us!

I don't know Photobucket, no help there, but we really need to see a 100% crop of the Raw preview as well as a 100% crop of the jpeg before we can comment on "sharpness".

OK, I see the difference, now did that show up viewing the images side by side in DPP, or only after you had resized and uploaded them?

But it is at "fit to screen", not 1:1.
Again: Compare sharpness at 100%

For reasons unkown, Canon chose to show sharpening in DPP even when you aren't zoomed to 100%. Unfortunately this means that when you are zoomed out, you get sharpening on the display but the results aren't real. If they were, you would have severe oversharpening when at 100%.

The converted JPG will only have the real sharpening at the pixel level, and when you zoom out and resize down to this size, the effect will be lost.

A better solution is to use little or no sharpening in DPP unless you are planning to use the output at full size only, like to use for a print. Then after resizing to your desired size for display, apply selective sharpening to the sharp parts of your photo.

See below: CR2 on the left, jpg on the right. No significant difference.

108vc - There is another common user error that causes a discrepancy between RAW preview and jpg. It involves noise reduction. DPP by default reads and applies whatever HINR you have set in your camera. However, it applies it only to the output image unless you click on the "Apply" button on the third tab, which causes the NR to be applied to the preview. So unless you are aware of this, you can be applying a load of Luminance NR, which destroys sharpness, without knowing it. The remedy is to go into Preferences/Tool Palette and change 'Default noise reduction settings' to 'Set as default' and bring both sliders down to zero.

On further reflection I think that it was unfair to call what I described above user error. More like user unawareness of the dumbness of DPP's designers.
