Flash possibilities for my G12

I just got a Canon G12. I also have two Pentax DSLR's...one a K10D , the other a KM/K2000.

I have a Pentax 360 flash unit, which I finally figured out and it works quite well with the Pentax bodies.

But I would like to get an add on flash for my Canon G12 and although I originally thought about getting a Canon 270....now I'm thinking that maybe it would be a better idea to get a flash that I could use with my Pentax DSLR's and Canon G series .

In other words....get neither a Pentax or a Canon flash...but some after market brand that I could use on both makes.

I like plenty of power, I like reliable, durable, good quality.

What flash would work well with both Pentax and Canon systems ?

Anything else I should think about..flash wise ?

I doubt that you'll be able to get a flash that will work in both the Pentax and Canon automatic modes; however, just about any flash with manual controls with "work" with both. In your place, I would get a Canon or Canon compatible flash that also has manual controls. Then you'd have an automatic flash for each camera and could use two flashes in manual mode when wanted.

I wonder about which would be better...the Canon 270 or 430 flash?

The 270 has a smaller size...good for portability, the 430 more power...I don't know enough about Canon flashes to know if there is much difference other than that.

I'm thinking that the 430 might have more versatility and more features...possibly adjustable ?

I wonder if anyone has experience with both the 270 and 430 and can list the pros and cons for the G12.

I take portraits and also vintage cars...sometimes at night. I wonder if the 270 or 430 have the illumination punch for night shots of vintage cars ?

I use a Canon 420EX for my G9. You may be able to find a nice used one for a pretty reasonable price.

I bought a 430EX for my G9. It worked great! It can turn and tilt upward, so it can point most anywhere I want. Also, it works great on my XSi (and hopefully on my soon-to-be-delivered 60D). As I recall, the 270 is completely fixed.

One thing to note...

The 430EX, in relation to the G9 and thus the G12, is a large device. I cannot safely stand my G9 when the 430 is mounted on it. C'est la vie, non? It's still a great flash.

Were it me, I'd look at the 430EX II. If I also had a Canon DSLR, I'd consider going for the 580EX II.
