In the beginning of my career it was the Sigma 180 Macro. I used it for hummingbirds and nature in general. Then the 300 f/4 IS took that spot over and things have gotten even better.

Now I do basically 3 things: Nature in the summer, sports and events throughout the school year and PJ work year round. For nature the 300 f/4 IS (sometimes w/Sigma 1.4x TC) still rules for me. For PJ I use a lot of lenses, but my 16-35L and 70-200 f/2.8 IS are my work horses. And for sports and events I use pretty much all of my lenses, but the 85mm f/1.8 sees a lot of use and so does the 100-300 f/4 EX.

16-35L by far.

Followed by a slew of telephotos (70-200, 100-400, 500L) and the TS-E 17.

70-200/2.8 I.S. and 300/2.8 I.S. are about equally tied as money makers. 24-70 is probably in 2nd place.

My personal favorites to shoot with are all primes.

70-200 f2.8L is
24-70 f2.8L
95% of the time, each mounted and shoulder slung.
If I just shouldered one, I'd tip over.

28-300L

That lens must be good since they can pixel-enhance the images to reveal that new engagement ring or letters written on fingernails during court proceedings or signs of new plastic surgery :)

That sounds very similar to what I experienced with my 300mm for nature images. Very versatile that 300mm f/4L IS.

Great responses, everyone, a great variety shown here (and some common ones that I though might be the case).

Thanks for commenting.

My 16-35 II was my money lens. After making a bunch of sales in 2010, it has been replaced with even better glass.
