I'll have to agree with the rest. #2 is really well done. Very nice capture.

#1 seems too dark and the facial expression (squinting), doesn't work for me.

According to my histogram the whites and blacks are balanced evenly? And unfortunately, he has a pretty squinty face.. haha

Thats where the histogram can steer you wrong, especially in a scene with wide ranges. This would be a better shot with a bit more light on his face and less dark mass up front.
