Hey guys,

So I am thinking of a new lens, and besides really wanting the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS USM which I can't afford right now, I am debating on what to purchase right now. I have about a $800-900 budget. Will be shooting a variety of events including candids, parties, events, pets and portraits...

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I'd get a faster prime of the focal length that you prefer.... ie... Sigma 85mm, 135L, etc.. for indoor events/candids, etc.

What Hieu said! You already have the 24-105, which probably covers most of what you shoot. What are you wanting that your current lens can't do? Knowing that will point you in the direction of what you want.

Like I said, if it wasn't for the price it would the 70/200 without a doubt. Probably something really fast, sharp and handles the dark well.

Like I said, pick the focal length you prefer and pick up a couple fast primes. 85mm f1.8, 100 f/2, 135L f/2 comes to mind. They are great low light options.

I think maybe I'll go 135, don't pick up much on the 105, but more then the 100 would.

Either the 135L or save it towards the 70-200 2.8 II

I too would like that lens, but cannot justify that much for my "hobby". I have looked at the less expensive non IS, or I find the 70-200mm f/4 tempting. But that probably wouldn't cover the "fast and handles the dark well" that you desire. Decisions, decisions, decisions! If only our pocketbooks matched our heart's desires ;)

Buying new lens is difficult - I always read and research and still doubt my decisions.... Good Luck!

Why not buy a 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS (or an f/4 IS version)? Both (used) should fit your budget and you should get most (all?) of your purchase price back if you sell them to get the f/2.8 II.

OK, my main question is then how much of a difference between the IS and non IS then for the 2.8?

They're pretty close. The non-IS might be a hair sharper, but it isn't worth debating this particular issue. The MK1 IS is still a superb lens and the IS is worth it in my book. That said, you won't get an IS MK1 for $900..maybe $1250 used.

What are your priorities? Lightweight, smaller? Versatility of zoom? Need f2.8? Can you do with f4? How about the reputable Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM? Cheaper and excellent, especially used. Many questions to address before shelling out for this kind of glass and money.

Rate your priorities and needs and then choose your lens.
