We typically spend a few hours on a newborn session... as they dictate the pace. From feeding...changing... screaming... lol..etc. We scheduled this as a very late session as all of our schedules didn't line up and she would have been much older than 14 days by the time we could photograph her.

The shoot started at 8... ended at midnight.

She never really went to sleep... fully alert most of the time... and constantly flailing her arms and legs. Kristy my partner would pose her... think she was out... and 2 seconds later... she was swimming or running...eyes wide open.... LOL crying..peeing.. pooping... flailing...eating... for 4 hours. Never seen anything like it before.

Had the heat up to 80+ ....Mom had a cd going of waves crashing to help with some soothing sounds...

I think we are going back to the hard fast rule... no newborns older than 10 days... all the newborns we have photographed have been 6-8 days old... and all they do is sleep... and that is a beautiful thing! :)

Very lucky to get any shots worth showing... I think I have a solid 25-30 we will be able to show.

Here are few to share.... good times!
Hatch

they look great. I don't see any movement or crying going on. Oh, you deleted those!

One thing that worked miracles for my boys when very young--the vacuum cleaner! They'd go limp within 2 seconds of hearing that sound. It was only after buring holes in the carpet that I realized I could have pulled the BELT and disabled the beater brush that ruined the carpet!!!

Give it a try. I've passed this tip to countless parents. It hasn't failed once.

Hard session, but very solid results. Love the quality of your black and whites. Since your at 1/125th for all of them, can I assume you used a large soft box as the main light source?

Thanks for the tip Dave... will have to give that a try next time :) Glad you like the shots.

SF1... used a medium Chimera softbox... great for shooting in tight locations.

Thanks again all.

I hear you on the problems, but if this kid were mine, I would be THRILLED with both #3 and #4 and delighted with #2. Great shots.

I commented on one of these in another thread. But, I have to say again .. I think you did a wonderful job.

I think you're efforts were definitely worth it.

I think they came out fantastic, I wouldn't give up on kids older than 10 days, not every baby is the same. Great work though. Keep it up.

My second daughter never slept for more than 20 minutes at a time from day 1!!

Your shots are great, I really like them and especially #4! How wonderful to have a newborn photo of a baby awake and alert!

For what ya had going on, these are spectacular!

Little nit in #2, you and I both know it's toes near the bicep. I would think about cloning it out, looks like a growth of some kind...? ;)

Many thanks all and a good catch on the toes peaking over. I will do a little Photoshop surgery and remove them :)

Thanks again!

Omigoodness, I absolutely love number 4. If this were my baby, I would be so pleased with these shots. Good work.
