oh, sorry if that was confusing... I was quoting you, who said they use the poppers. I don't have anything right now to trigger my flashes. =)

I have experimented with the Skyports and Cybersyncs over and over. I can fire the strobes that are mounted on 13 foot stands in the gym when I am walking down the hall outside the gym. Press the test button and BOOM! The strobes go off. I usually do it at every venue just 'cause I can. :-)

If you had bought the Pocket Wizards you wouldn't have had anything hanging off your camera: one PW mounts directly onto your hotshoe while the others are attached to your flashes via a very short cord (that comes with the PW). Be aware, however, that the 580 EX has no place for a transmitter to attach. I've tried using all my speedlites with their built-in infra-red capabilities (master/slave) but have never gotten them to work more than 25% of the time.

I was speaking of the old Pocket Wizard II system. I've seen the new PW (mini and flex) and it looks like they have a direct hotshoe mount so you can actually use them with a 580EX, which wasn't an option with the PW II.
