Thanks everyone for all your input - it's much appreciated. Think I might try and negotiate a few quid off the asking price, but may just take a punt on this one! Thanks again.

Andy,

From what I have seen, Good Sigma lenses are very good whether DG or not. If you trust your source to tell you it is a good copy go for it.

[First post - here goes!]

I bought this pre-macro version as a bundle with my 350D body from London Camera Exchange in early July - at the time I didn't even know there was a later macro version out, but I got a great deal on the package plus warranties and a VAT receipt - so I'm not complaining!

It's a very good lens - a bit big, a bit heavy, pretty noisy, and (my copy at least) is a bit soft at f2.8 ...but not so much as to be unuseable.

Overall I'm very pleased with it, I've since acquired a mint used Canon 200mm F2.8 L mk2, and a brand new Canon 17-40 f4 L ...and my Sigma 24-70 EX DG DF F2.8 (non-macro) is not disgraced by this company.

Nice post Rob and nice lens combo. You make a good point about 'lens company'. Once one has a quality lens then any inferior lenses quickly lose much of their shine. Getting a set of lenses that all meet personal quality and handling demands helps one to simply enjoy taking shots, rather than ruminating on 'if only' ...
