I purcahsed an aftermarket lens for my 7d (tamron 10-24) and from time to time I get an error code that says the lens does not like the body and the contacts are dirty ( I don't get this error with any of my canon lens')!!!
Problem is that this seems to be spuratic at best, and after cleaning the contacts no diffrence is made. Took set up to camera shop and repair guy was puzzled and said maybe need to send to canon.
Like I said you never know when this error is going to occur, but when it does the image is still captured on to cf card, but I have to turn camera off and back on to get going again and you don't know if it will contuine with the error or allow me to keep shooting.
I am at the point of frustrated with this, any advice from others?
Thank you
Joe

the lens may need to be re-chipped. i understand some sigmas experienced this as well. someone will chime in who may have had first hand experience, hold on...............

but your lens is new?

the lens is about 4 months old and started this problem about 1 month after having it. what is this rechip process? edit to add that this lens preforms flawless on my XTi and that adds to my frustration.

most likely not the rechipping then if it worked on your xti.

something to do with the 7d by the sounds of it. maybe do a reset on the 7d and start from scratch again. i'm lost otherwise.

re: chipping - some lens brands pre 2000 needed to be rechipped to be compatible with certain cameras.

got this back from canon today. I will give it a try!

Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you. I am sincerely very sorry to
hear that you receive an error 01 on your EOS 7D.

An Err 01 indicates that communications between the camera and lens is
faulty. You will want to clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser
and a blower brush. Use the eraser to gently scrub across the lens
contacts only (page 9) and then gently wipe this off with a microfiber
cloth to remove and excess debris, being careful to avoid getting any
into the lens. Does this resolve the issue? If not you may want to try
a different lens on the camera to see if this is the cause. If another
lens exhibits the same issue you may need to send this into the Factory
for repairs. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes you.

I cannot see how this could be an incompatibility problem if it DID work on your 7D for a month, unless you've done a 7D firmware update that coincided with that. I suspect it really is just a contact problem or something.

I am starting to have the same issue with my Tokina 12-24mm and my 7D. It just started doing this exact same thing last week. It works just fine on my 30D, and that is the body it is on 90% of the time. gonna have to try the eraser method of cleaning, and see what that does.

Thank you. So I guess there is no solution except to use my Tamron on my Rebel and/or get a new lens for the 7d.

The problem is with the Tamron lens, not with the 7D.... Contact Tamron service, not Canon. Tamron has had some issues, too, but are usually good about addressing them. I don't know about that lens in particular, but some others have had updates to their firmware. Tamron will tell you if that's needed on the lens. With lenses, you can't update the firmware yourself, but they can tell you how to check what version you have (it's embedded in the EXIF metadata of images made with the lens).

Cleaning lens contacts doesn't solve a circuitry or mechanical or firmware issue in a lens.

I do not like Canon's recommended method of cleaning and wish they would stop that. A lot of the time the problem is oils... Either finger oils or from the mechanisms in the camera. A pencil eraser is made from vegetable oil, which isn't likely to help... Plus there is the risk of getting bits of eraser in the camera.

And the reason to use an eraser on electronic contacts is to remove oxidization... But Canon gold plates those contacts precisely because gold doesn't oxidize. Using an eraser, there's also some risk of scratching the gold plating.

Instead use a clean rag and put a couple drops of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on it. Then wipe the contacts with that. It will remove oily residues that can cause interruption of the electronic signals. There is a stronger cleaner called DeOxit, but it isn't necessary.... Most other electronic contact cleaners are nothing more than isopropynol. You just pay a lot more for them in an electronics store, than for rubbing alcohol in the grocery store or pharmacy.
