So I REALLY want to get a telephoto lens, I make $150 a month and don't want to save up. I never really use telephoto. i do use adapted lenses rarely. i will get a nice one later but for now, i want one for less than $150 with auto focus. i don't care if its slow, cheap, old, or has no IS (im steady-handed). just something "nice" for under $150.
i have my eyes on the
Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III used for $109. anyways ANY help is appreciated :) just remember, NO MORE than $150.

What camera? I would take a look at a used 55-250mm IS if you have a 1.6x camera. You may be able to get a used one for pretty darn close to your budget - it's a very nice lens for the price.

A telephoto for under $150? Not much choices....

But even if you did bump up your budget a little, I'd still say 55-250mm IS - it is a helluva lens. It doesn't get much better until you jump up to say the newer Tamron 70-300mm and Canon 70-200mm f/4.

A used Sigma 70-300 might be an option as well.

tamron or sigma 70-300 is going to be your best bet if you cant afford the 55-250, although those can be found for around 165shipped in the classfieds

i had this lens with my xt, used it quite a bit, sharp

The various 70-300/75-300 options are as bad as some people make out if you've got good light and can afford to stop down a bit.

55-250mm is a good choice and has IS, there is also the old 70-210mm with constant f/4 aperture that might be a good option. I would stay away of the slower 70-300mm lenses.

The old EF 70-210 USM can sometimes be found in this range as well.

Have a look at KEH.com. There are lots of Canon branded 300mm telephoto zooms for under or near $150. None of them are great, but stop down a little (or a lot), keep them still, use a lens hood, shoot raw and use Canon's DPP software to fix chromatic aberration, and you'll get some decent images. The EF 100-300 f/4.5-4.5 USM is no worse optically than the EF 75-300s and gives fast ring USM focusing and a smaller size. They have some EF 100-300mm f/5.6 lenses too. These are larger and heavier with slow autofocus and push-pull zoom.

If you don't need 300mm, they have EF 70-210mm f/4 lenses well under your budget which are pretty decent although the auto focus is fairly slow. If you want to be really cheap, they have some Canon EF 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 lenses for as little as $59. These are tiny, light, and not bad optically. I would suggest spending the extra $6 for the II version of the lens as they are slightly sharper than the original and USM versions.

These pictures were actually taken with a Canon 75-300mm lens.
