Out testing my new lens today, I came across this pair of "odd fellows". A Great Egret and a Snowy Egret standing together about 50 yards away provided an excellent test shot. I even got their feet in for a change. Canon 20D, Canon 400 f/4 DO, Canon 1.4 ext, JPG large/fine, AWB, ASA 100, 1/800, f/8, hand held. This new lens is heavier than my 300 f/4, but I can hand hold it, which was the whole idea. I am pleased so far. Airshow this weekend will be a real test. :D

That photo is good for showing the identification marks of the Great Egret versus the Snowy Egret. The Great is twice the size of the Snowy. The Great has a yellow bill and black feet. The Snowy has a black bill and yellow feet.

Earlier this year, during nesting season, I was at an egret rookery with my camera gear. The little Snowy Egrets had all sorts of neat little nests all over. Then the big Great Egret was building a nest on top of the tree, and it needed more sticks. So it came over and would steal a stick from the Snowy nest. Of course, the Snowy would squawk and flap and raise all kinds of ruckus, but the Great didn't care. It was twice the size of the Snowy, so it knew that the Snowy wasn't going to attack. Fun to watch!
