I need to know if I am SOL with my current situation.
So I was applying for film school, and put down a $3000 deposit. Plans changed and I decided not to go anymore, I know.... it was a deposit. But I think its outrageous that they wouldn't at least give me some sort of partial refund. I didn't sign any contracts with them for the payment because I was on vacation during the time and paid with a visa.
This school is a well known film school in my area.
Your 2 cents please.

i am in no position to provide legal advice but my 2 cents would be to contact your visa cc and request a charge back.

As far as I am aware, in Europe a verbal contract is as good as a written one.

So if you talked to them, you might have entered into such an agreement - on that note though, I am NOT a lawyer.

do you mean it's been a while since you authorized a charge to your visa or it's been a while since you sent the payment.

I didn't sign any contracts so I don't (think) they've got anythin on me

if you signed a cc slip you are basically authorizing a charge to your card. this allows your cc company to provide funds to the merchant and the cc company bill you according to the agreed terms.

for the amount of 3k the merchant (school) will most likely have their legal department fight the chargeback. which is a very easy thing for merchants to do. most cases a proof of authorization is required (signed cc slip).

a chargeback can work in a consumers favor if the merchant provided incorrect information. in this case your merchant provides a service (rather than goods). if they advertise "learn digital photography" and they are teaching you how to load film your cc company will be more willing to accept your chargeback request. this is assuming you can prove the false advertising.

in the future please be sure to charge what you definitely want. i understand that plans change but chargebacks and stop payments is the reason for high APR's and other fees.

once again this is my advice and i am not a lawyer.
