I just picked up a roll of Savage seamless paper in 107". I was kind of planning to mount some screw-eyes on the wall in the basement and use that to hold a pipe which would support the paper. But then I am thinking it would be more practical to just get a portable stand.

Calumet has a few attractive options in the ~$150 range. B&H and Adorama both have house-brands as well that have mostly good reviews.

I am not opposed to a DIY solution but it needs to look good.

I skewered my 9' roll of paper with a 10' long 1-1/4" pvc pipe and hung it from the ceiling with rubber-tipped hooks from Home Depot. I keep the paper from unrolling with two large clips placed on each end of the paper.

Might not be the solution for everyone, but works well enough for me and looks good, too.

Total cost - less than 10 bucks.

I bought the Adorama background support. If you work as a fabricator it won't be difficult at all. If you are not comfortable cutting steel or aluminum tubing and welding same it's not a quick task but one best left to others experienced in fabrication. I currently don't have the gear required to construct a background support for on location use. Two large screw in hooks will support a length of tubing with a roll of BG paper or cloth but you will need to attach standoffs to the wall first due to the size of the rolls. The muslin backgrounds do not need the standoff but a roll of seamless paper will if your plan is to use it on a wall. I looked at several BG supports before acquiring the Flashpoint background support kit from Adorama. YRMV

I bought all the stuff to do that but then decided I would rather have a portable setup.

Thanks. I have some flashpoint monolights which I really like. House-brand stuff can sometimes be an excellent deal. I even saw another very pricey brand in the local camera shop this weekend that was identical in construction and features to my flashpoint units. At least triple the price.

Ill check that out. Do you have the 10' or 13' background support unit?

Not really portable as in drive all over the place and set it up, however I have no problem doing that with my vehicle. But I may want to change the location of my home studio (garage would work much better in the summer, and I will also be picking up some muslin or canvas backgrounds as well and I would be traveling with those.

So I suppose I am now just asking for recommendations for a portable support system.

I bought this (external link) which supports my 53" roll of Savage Thunder Gray, and I couldn't be happier.
