Used one of the methods I saw on this forum (50x FL, wide open, tripod, mirror lock-up, timer, etc) to MAF my lenses and the 50mm came in at -15. Just today was tinkering with my 85mm and 135mm and was pixel peeping - RAZOR SHARP! I tried some object at different distances, still SHARP!

I thought I would throw the 50 in the mix as well and see how it did just shooting some around the house items, so I went back to my target bottle of champagne and it was soft at -15. So I went back to ZERO and it was better (mind you this is all on the camera's display, but the difference was clear). After a less formal MAF session with the 50mm it ended up at +2 for optimal sharpness (all of this at f2.0). Keep in mind these were all at pretty close distance to the subject, so turned around and shot at something 3x the distance. Soft again. Went back to -15...it was sharp again for the longer subject.

I know that MAF is not the "end all" to lens issues, but is this just part of the deal? My other lenses do not seem to have this issue, why only the Sigma? Will a factory calibration help with this issue? Or do I just adjust between -15 and + 2 depending on how I am using the lens?

Send it in and get it calibrated properly. To do it really well they will want your camera as well.

I used the Moire method to set MAF on my Sigma 50mm F/1.4 and several other lens as well this past weekend. For my equipment, the Sigma lens needed and MAF of minus 1.

I was quite happy with the results and like this lens.

i had a similar issue, but i differnt issue too. Sigma just equals problems in my experience.

just save yourself and get rid of it man... sell it or return (if your within the time frame) and go with a different brand (Canon).

go read my 10 page thread about my AF issues with the Sigma 50.

Bought it used. Tested it extensively on my XSi and it worked fine for me on that body. I get good shots with it, buts its not consistent like the 85 and 135 are...
