I was asked to photograph a birthday party.. it's in a town that I do not feel comfortable traveling to. (As a young woman traveling alone). Is this the part of photography where I need to just suck it up? Or is there a tactful way to turn it down?

Wasn't it last year when a young woman photographer was killed going out alone on a job? It's not an unfounded fear. Heck, even as an old guy, I'm careful. I've been held up at gunpoint more than once before, and I'd have been killed the second time if the mugger had had a better pistol than the FIE .25 he tried to use.

If you don't have someone to watch your back, just tell them you don't travel to that area. Dominos Pizza in Washington DC will tell people that in a heartbeat for certain areas.

Try getting pizza delivered, in some areas of Chicago, or St. Louis.

Strange how many deserted, rundown locations, sometimes make the best shoot locations.

I'd say suck it up, but then I'm a male, usually make bad decisions, and I am rather scary looking... It sounds like you're just the opposite.

8-)

Are you admitting she makes better choices?

Yup! ;-)a

I generally look for the worst run-down, crappy places and that's where I gravitate towards.

Besides, as long as I'm not admitting that to my wife, I'm okay with it. :p
