Printing problems from CS5 to Canon PIxma Pro 9000 Mk 11

I have Photoshop CS5 Extended and have just bought a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mk II. I have also installed the Canon Easy-Photoprint Pro plug in for CS5. When I try to print from either the Photoshop print function or the Photoprint Pro plug in I get the same problem. The printer starts to print but only manages a strip between 2mm and 5cm before ejecting the paper and looking for the next sheet. If there is no more paper I get the 'out of paper' message. The problem is intermittent, but happens in the majority of cases when I choose High print quality which, as I bought the printer for photos, is most of the time. A secondary problem is that some of the aborted prints had a double image with about 2 - 3 cm between images, and wild colours. This seems to be a CS5 problem as I don't have a problem with stand alone Canon Easy-Photoprint EX, MS Word and MS Excel. Has anyone had similar problems and possibly a solution before I go crazy, not to mention the waste of paper and ink.

If all of your settings are correct I would have to say there is a problem with the CS5 install. As you say things seem to print okay from other apps. Myself, I have not heard of this problem in the past.

Let your thread soak here for a few hours and see what others might have to say but while waiting I would shoot off an email to both Canon and Adobe CS and see what they may have to say.

I have not ever had this issue either :( Very strange for sure. Hopefully somebody will respond with a solution otherwise I would start with a fresh CS5 install.

Best,
Jay

this link is saying the canon plug for is not compatible with cs5..

I do all my printing from CS5/Lightroom or Phase One Capture 6 Pro and never have a problem.

Thanks guys. The original Easy-Photoprint Pro didn't work with CS5 but there is a newer version 2.4.5 which can be installed. This problem applies though with both Photoprint and Photoshop. I emailed Canon who replied to say that, if the problem only occured in Photoshop, then they couldn't help as that wasn't a Canon product. I have since telephoned and the guy said he thought there was something you could change in Photoshop settings. He said he would check and phone me back, but nothing so far. I'll try Adobe now.

One thing you can try is to print from the Canon software -- both Digital Photo Professional and Zoombrowser have Print functions -- and see if the problem shows up or if it is Photoshop specific. That should help you to nail things down and with communicating with Canon support.

Thanks Tony - I've tried printing from Photoshop CS5, CS2, Word, Paint, Zoombrowser and Digital Photo Professional. I every case the problem arose when using the High quality print option. Running the same print options but with quality set to Standard, the print came out OK every time. Seems like I have a faulty printer. Thanks to all for your help. Alistair:D

Well, that's definitely something to get back to Canon support about -- the problem has nothing to do with Photoshop and the difference between quality settings in the driver make a difference. It's hard to say where the fault is, but they should be clear on the fact that it's Canon problems and not Photoshop, and should be able to better advise you, as in do you just returen the printer for a new one...

I would try completely uninstalling the printer, disconnecting it from the computer and power source. Also power down your computer and reboot it. Now reinstall the printer, using the newest drivers downloaded from Canon.

And... when trying the printer again, first make sure the the Print with Preview option is disabled in the Canon print dialog.

I have finally managed to solve this problem after having the first printer replaced and finding the same problem with the replacement. I thought it was too much of a coincidence to have two faulty printers with the same problem which had baffled everyone - it must be down to my system. After trying everything I could, re-installed drivers, re-installed software, cursing, kicking - I had a Eureka moment. My Spyder 3 Pro instructions advised to always connect the Spyder directly to the computer and never via a USB hub, so I thought I would try this as a last resort, and it worked perfectly. There was no mention of this in the Canon instructions or the troubleshooting guide, and both Canon Support and the printer supplier could not suggest any solution. I have now emailed them to add to the knowledge database. Thanks for all your support and suggestions.

Hmmm... So were you keeping your Spyder device plugged in constantly, using the (bogus) ambient light function?

Best practice is to keep your ambient lighting consistent and disable the ambient light function. Disconnect the Spyder hardware when not in use profiling the display.

NorthmanAl, are you saying you had the printer plugged in to a hub?

Yes. The USB ports on the back of the computer were full so I bought a mains powered 7 port hub to give more connections. Its easier to use as it sits on top of my desk beside the monitor, whereas the PC sits underneath the desk. Everything I have plugged in via the hub before has worked OK, so I didn't think connecting the printer would cause any problems - but I was wrong. It was only the High Quality output which was affected - Standard Quality and below all worked OK. Pity it took me so long to discover.

Hi ChasP505

No, the Spyder is only connected when I am using it to calibrate/recalibrate - it lives in its box in the cupboard the rest of the time. I only mentioned it as this is the only time I have ever heard of having to connect directly to the computer, and it was this which eventually struck me as possibly causing the printer problem.

Outstanding! Thank you for posting your solution here and hope it helps others out.

I have to say I am a little red faced here though. I always tell folks to never assume anything, I did here because I assumed you had already tried different ports/cables.
