I hope everyone realizes that Dave was kidding and that the building in the pic was a location I was shooting and not my home, studio or storage shed... lol

So they were finally granted parole?

Has anyone seen the movie Dodgeball? These look like the outfits that the team got by accident.....

Thanks Sheldon.

For that type of shot I don't use any deflectors or diffusion. Since I wasn't going for soft diffused light I had the light source at a working distance that gave me the most even lighting from left to right so that I wouldn't have to make exposure adjustments or do any D&B to even things out.

Nice. I had noticed the harder light, but was guessing that you used a deflector with no diffusion.

Alright fellow gripnerds....if you want to see some real multi-usage of grip gear, check this out:

This is my wife (who will kill me for posting this photo online) using one of my Avenger C-Stands as an angel food cake inverter (apparently you have to cool it upside down).

(Pay no attention to the kegerator in the background) :D

Please excuse the camera-phone photo.

An angel food cake cooling light stand and kegerator in one shot, wow, now I've seen everything!

How could one notice anything else? That is a prime piece of gear, and in the kitchen, no less.

Yeah...it took a bit of finagling and bargaining to convince the wife to allow me to keep it in the kitchen (rather than banished to the man-cave), but as long as she can use my studio gear as cooling racks for her baking, it's safe for now!

I'd say that's a fair trade off. Marriage is all about compromise ;).

I know that this was once discussed but I don't think I've seen anyone using it or posting images. What is it, you ask?

The Matthews Cheater Adapter. It's a neat little piece of grip hardware. It's absolutely fantastic when you're working in small spaces, using a stand with a small-ish footprint like an Avenger A5017, and don't have or want to use arms or booms just to get greater downward angles from your light and modifier.

Like a lot of grip gear, you really see its usefulness when you actually have one, and until you have one you just can't justify spending $30 for a part that seems to do very little. ;)

If you see the usefulness in this little doodad then it's well worth it and a nice addition to a well rounded grip kit.

This is the Cheater Adapter mounted to a standard Avenger baby pin.

The next three images show a 22" Speedotron beauty dish mounted directly to the baby pin on a light stand, the maximum downward angle, and then the maximum downward angle with the cheater adapter in place.

I didn't want to start photographing many modifiers but the cheater adapter is equally as cool when using strip boxes or even the 39" Deep Octa.

Oh, Lord, now I need to start rereading this thread from the beginning again ... I might understand more of it this time. :-)

That's a very cool little gadget Rob. Much easier than grabbing a grip head/arm/sandbag combo.

...

I think Jerry K. might have been first to mention the Matthews Cheater, Rob:

I know I had never heard of this gizmo until he mentioned it and provided a link.

Yup, that's exactly where I first saw it.
