This is "gripish" so ....:

Wallee + Tethertools provide a very nice iPad mounting solution (as seen in Brendan's post here: https://photography-on-the.net …?p=13583958&postcount=776) but it comes at a premium price. I've been using a solution for the 99%. It's a very economical Wallee/Tethertools workalike that others might find useful.

I'm using two basic components: A Delkin Fat Gecko iPad holder and a generic eBay ballhead. Total cost: $28. The two parts are shown here:

nice stuff Dave

Hi Dave,

Is that the standard or heavy duty flex arm?

Perfect for what I'm looking for! I was getting frustrated trying to look for one with the thread on the back, and here it is! I'm glad you posted this just in time, because I almost pulled the trigger on a more expensive Ram's. I'm assuming this works with both iPad and iPad2?

There's a Fat Gecko version available for the iPad V1 and V2:

I shared your frustration regarding trying to find an iPad mount with a 1/4-20 thread. I was absolutely delighted when I found the Delkin Fat Gecko. Goofy name; great, problem-solving product.

Hi Dave,

It's probably the equivalent of the heavy duty version, Rob. The one I have is not a Manfrotto product. The embarrassing truth is that I got it from Amvona several years ago. It had been sitting in its package, unopened until a few days ago when I decided to try it with the Gecko and iPad. It's very solid. Using the touchscreen is no problem at all.

If the iPad 3 is released in March, no doubt there will be a flood of holders available by April. I have a V1 iPad and it's perfectly fine for this particular application.

Thanks for the links. Just ordered one! I'll be using it with the combination of super clamp and variable friction magic arm...

Excellent grippy post Dave, you come up with so many unique solutions. Did you find that Nano clone on ebay as well?

It's actually a Calumet-branded stand, Dave:

I bought two of them some time ago when they were on sale for $23 each. They're the same as these:

Hey guys,

after heading to my local Manfrotto dealer to order an Avenger A4039CS (which I did order), he showed me the Manfrotto 254B Autoboom.

Has anyone used these? The maximum advertised load is not that great, but we did try a monolight with a 100cm Octa on it and it was definitely fine and stable at max extension.
Autobooms seem perfect for a key light. Put it on a wheeled base stand and you've got the most flexible light ever, plus it does save space as it doesn't extend on the other side like regular booms do.
Only downside seems to be the fairly low maximum load and the weight of the autoboom itself. Or is there something I'm not seeing?

I've also joined the Autopole club. Yay! :)

Dennis, it seems like a cool idea, but with no extension on the other side of the boom, there is no way to counterweight and balance it on a stand, so it won't be as stable. Also, it will be more awkward to make adjustments as you'll have to support the full weight of the boomed modifier when changing boom position.

A lot of guys go with an all steel rolling stand (Rob hasthis one (external link)) and add a D600 or D650 boom when needed.

...

Isn't the magic in the Autoboom the "self-balancing spring", Dave? No counterweight needed.

I believe so. The combination of the self balancing spring and the relatively light load capacity makes it work without additional counterweights.
