Hi guys

In about a months time (OK a little bit longer :P) but there is the Avalon Airshow.

Now i was after some tips on night photography of the planes, also a little bit of day time.

There's a 'Night Alight' show on the Friday and i was looking to go to it, and also take some pics :P but i was wondering what would be the best settings from something like that?

I'm running a Canon 1000D with a 18-55mm and 75-300mm lens, im also thinking of renting out a 100-400mm just for the airshow, is that a good or bad idea?

anyway thanks in advance.

Leigh

Going to Oshkosh for first time this year!

Look at some of Jay's (FlyingPhotog) recent threads. He'll probably be along to give you some hints that aren't covered in the above threads.
My best advice is to go out in the evening & shoot some traffic, both white cars & black cars. You'll get practice panning & soon see the benefits of using a manual exposure, too.
First shoot with moving cars need advice.

Personally, I'd kill for a chance to shoot them in the evening. Whatever you do, don't miss that part of the show!

I think it would be worth the money for the extra 100mm. But you could get good images with your zoom, too.

Good luck!

I see you've got the same kit I do and I can tell you night shots could be tricky. With the 75-300 and 100-400 only going down to f5.6 at the long end, you might have a hard time keeping the shutter speeds fast enough to hand hold and not need a tripod. I know I hard a hard time at my first night show.

I couldn't agree more. I wish I'd been given this advice before my first show.

Another thing to consider with the 100-400 is the "push-pull" zoom. Could take some time to get used to if you haven't used it before. I'd recommend renting it a few days in advance to get used to it so you don't miss any opportunities during the show.

The 100-400mm isnt expensive for a weekend (roughly about $70AUD) so i should see what i can do about it

I had a bit of a play with a 100-400 on a D60 in the local Jessops store last week. Although there was no card in the camera I was able to fire of a few shots and see them on the instant review. Shooting at 400mm full frame images looked pin sharp at 1/40 to 1/60th shutter speeds with the IS on which really did surprise me, I didn't think that it would work that well.
