Hi there,
I have recently posted various shots of the Alwen Dam in North Wales, and decided to shoot the location in a different way, as even im getting fed up of seeing the same shots all the time and I like a challenge.

I decided to climb much lower below the surface line and get the first shot (hdr) and the second is just off the dam itself and I went for a different pp technique.

please let me know your thoughts.

thanks

Don

I really like the 2nd one, just wished the sky cooperated a bit more with the conversion. Great place, didn't you do a night shot here as well or am I hallucinating again?

thanks for the comment Todd...Yeah I have done previous shoots here, just various locations on the site. I was frustrated about the sky too. In the colour version the corner where the sun is was very dark in comparison compared to the rest of the sky, hence why I changed to b/w!

The first shot is overcooked, the main problem areas being the sky, followed by the brickwork which has the HDR glow. Also, look under the arches, there is a very strong magenta, which unless they have purple bulbs under the arches does not look natural.

The second shot shows the following defects:
Dust bunnies in the sky
Too much flair (this is a subjective criticism)
The trees to the left and grass to the right have been toned to complete black.

I like the composition of both shots, but the processing of both images appears clumsy.

John.

To be honest, I find your some of comments incorrect. Granted the magenta point on the first pic, but clumsy...Im sure the fact that I edited them was my choice on how I thought they looked good. I appreciate that everyone's opinions will differ, and I'm open to your thoughts, but at the same time...is this the critique section?

Anyway, taking on board your constructive comments, I did state at the start of the post that it was something different from me, meaning that I was being experimental and doing things out of the ordinary for what I would normally do. Pushing the envelope for me with different methods is a way of improving overall as a 'tog, but if people like you are out to put people down, then please take your comments elsewhere.

You asked for peoples thoughts in your original post. What am I supposed to do other than offer criticism? Nothing that I posted was intended to "put you down". It's my opinion of the work and it was intended to be constructive.

I notice I misspelled flare as "flair", I hope you did not read anything untoward in that.

Your reaction to my post is astonishing. I certainly will take my comments elsewhere, as clearly you are uninterested in recognising the flaws in your work.

John.

There is no need to be patronising or condescending, I was just saying that I felt your comments were unjust. Like I said, its an art form that is open to interpretation and I didn't agree with your comments. I know they are not top class photos, but I like them.

I appreciate, decent comments that are constructive and put across less bluntly. Still I'm sure your work is outstanding too? Still we all can't be perfect, just like your people skills.

Anyway, as far as taking your comments elsewhere, please do....and I'm sure I will see you on the rally circuit at some point in the future.

This is the comment that says everything about you.

This is your reaction to some mild criticism of a photograph. Does it seem proportional, or even rational?

So now your a judge of character as well as a world beating photographer...this just gets better...
It is a rational comment, is it not good that 'fellow' photographers cant meet up and chat man to man, or is it the done thing to criticise behind the keyboard... I do shoot the rally circuit, so why is this not a rational comment?
