I think this body is still too new and no one has the underwater housing kit for it yet. Too bad too, bc Id be interested in seeing how it performs as well.

i'm going on a cruise in a few weeks wanted to try a housing, but they are too $$. I'm considering buying a simpler plastic bag type solution, but they make me nervous (despite all the stellar reviews)

Isnt the housing about $180 for the S95? Considering its a $400 camera, I dont think thats too much seeing as how its a solid housing and underwater housing are ALWAYS expensive. I think its worth it and wouldnt take my S95 under water with anything but. But thats just my opinion...

I had owned 3 previous Powershot housing. Each one as as robust and tough. Not the perfect setup as I can't attach lens etc etc. But like the G-series, I found those "missing" functionality, never used.

After an absence of almost 5 years of active diving and u/w photography, I like to restart this hobby.

Be patience my friends, i will be in Bali in 2 weeks time and lets see what I can deliver.

Oh peeve is that it is a 5cm macro mode, vs the 0cm of my old A620.

The setup is simple to use and all the buttons are easily accessible.

Very nice--I take it you were using the onboard flash? Didn't if scare the bejesus out of everything you shot? :D

Thank U MOkoFOko. Glad you liked it. On board flash only.

I took a slow approach towards the cleaning station where the fish are.

I was just worried that I had cooked the fishes with so many flashes (for the bracketing shots).

The original Canon S95 battery is good for about 280 - 370 shots only. Goes down if a lot of flash or IS are used. Small trade off for the compact size of the S95.

PS: the aftermarket battery is good for about 150 shots only. Grrrr.... and I hated changing batteries in between dives.

Heres another :

^^^ that's a good point--I've wondered how many shots I could get on my s95 with the flash firing. Still, the s95 pumps out great images, and you could use a DSLR instead, but the underwater housing will end up running a few grand... You may as well have 2x s95s and 2x underwater housings :D

I just wished for 0 cm macro and longer battery life. I never had to use a strobe for my past shots with the A620/S40/S50. Really, i know that strobe are good for lighting but I am not tat good a diver yet. ^-^

Hello lensmen,

Great photos.

I have a question to ask of you, I am present using a Lumix FX48 and is considering between a S95 or FX78.

Could you advise me which of the two should I buy.

I use the camera mainly for underwater photography, though I still consider myself as a newbie.

Let me know.

Thanks.
Felix

Hi Felix

I would strongly recommend the S95 + canon u/w housing setup.

Firstly, the S95 picture quality is stunning. There has been numerous occasion that when my 7D could not deliver as expected (too much settings to do), my S95 simply did. The image sensor is amongst the largest of any PnS compact camera - delivering image quality that sometimes I feel is as good as the DSLR. The 2.0 lens, means low light photos are easy.

Then the U/W portion. Canon has a good track records in this area and I had used one since 2002 - S40/S50/A620 and now S95. The previous ones, I sold them 2nd hand after using for about 2 years, as newer ones have better features - eg. better power management, better colors and brighter screen. The housing is made of thick & solid plastic with buttons well placed & easy to access even with gloves. You feel very confident with this. It is positive buoyant, so it you accidentally slipped out of the laynard band (supplied), you can also find it on the surface.

In this Bali trip, I was stunned myself at the clarity and richness of the photos. Glad that I returned to this hobby of diving and U/w Photography.... Have fun.

Oh, one more thing. The photos you see above, I do not have external flash nor macro attachments, to take those shots - i dun like too many stuff around my BC. this.

Just wondering, how do you guys find the AF in terms of speed and accuracy underwater?

I admit that I don't have an S95. Mine is a much older A720IS, but I do have the Canon housing for it and I thought a toss in a couple of shots I took with it. It doesn't compare to the Nikonos with strobe that I used 20 years ago in the Caymans, but with a bit of care you can get usable shots with it.

Here are a:

Starfish (yeah I know - tough subject with all the jumping around and such ;) ) with some CA on the ends of the legs - can't seem to figure out how to get rid of it
