Ditto this:

Then last spring I rented then bought the 5DmkII and am finally able to make 16x20 prints that can hang next to my 4x5 prints. The extra mega pixels worked. The big live view screen on the back of the mkII lets me compose and focus the way I am use to with my view cameras (sans the upside down image) On the classic I could barely read the lcd screen without donning reading glasses, and I never have enjoyed composing and focusing through a view finder on any 35mm camera in the past. This feature alone for me was worth it.

On the down side I was able to push the shadows much more on the classic than my mkII, you really have to be careful here because the pattern noise can get ugly in this regard. My classic was a nice camera and first foray into the larger sensors, but my mkII is now letting me shoot stuff with the convenience of digital and a quality similar to 4x5 in medium size prints.I'd say if the funds are available get the mkII, use it for a year while the mkIII comes out, gets its firmware upgrades, and the price settles, then latter you can sell the II and use the money to upgrade if you feel its needed.

IQ wise the ability to push shadows in post is the only advantage the 5dc has. The mkii is better in every other regard though in some instances the difference isn't much. ISO 3200 on the mkii is a bit cleaner than 1600 on the 5dc. I think for the OP's situation it doesn't make too much sense to upgrade. Wait and see what the 5dII successor features and go from there. In the meanwhile the money could be better spent towards lenses. I kept the 5dc as it sufficed for my needs even though I felt the 5dII was better. And in the back of my mind I always regret selling the mkii even though the tangible benefits it offered were minimal for me.

I owned and currently own the 5DII. I would agree with what you have stated, Chris. Curious what EL_PIC has to say.

Your getting everything the 5Dc has times 3. Except maybe the AF system. ISO is great, video is great if you go for that. Resolution is fantastic.......just go ahead and get it!! I'd still have mine if it wasn't for the 1D Mark IV I had to have, but didn't have the money.

Canon 7D, Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 24-105L f/4, Canon 35L 1.4, Canon 200L f/2.8, Canon 70-200L II IS f/2.8, Canon 300L f/2.8IS, 580ex Flash, 430ex Flash, 1.4X Converter. Bunch of other crap! I want the new 500mmL and the 200L f/2.0

I upgraded from my 2 5Dcs to 2 5DIIs and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well I like the 5DIIs. THe incredible low light performance is what really stands out for me ands in the type of work i do you can usually never have to many MPs. The micro adjust is really cool also. Having a larger LCD means really noting to me but having a larger one certainly doesn't hurt when looking at viewing the histogram. I didn't think that I would be as happy with the upgrade as I am.

thanks for your insights airfrogusmc. And actually, I purchased my 5Dc from a studio guy who was upgrading to 5D2s as well. Eventually, I'll take the plunge and probably feel the same way you did about your upgrade.

Appreciate the 'push off the fence.' I'm going to do it eventually ... just not exactly sure when. Probably when basketball season ends in late Feb. Coming up fast!

I have a copy of each 5D and 5D2 (thankfully I didn't offload my 5D after I bought the mark II). I enjoy almost all of the improvements on markII especially interface, video, live view, integrated sensor cleaning and microadjustment (for my 50L).

That said, for portrait work within ISO100-800, I prefer the original 5D.

Yep they do continue to use this marketing scam despite several years of declining market share. Makes you wonder ...

FWIW - I waited for the 5D MK II and after the pre release of features and specs decided to buy the 5D C. To me the 5D MK II is like a disease and its good when it skips a generation. I might do a 5D MKIII or a 3D if Canon listens to its customer need.

Canon needs to focus on customers need and Quality Control rather than more MP and small insignificant new features else they will become the new #3 or #4 in sales {Canon MK III or MK IV that is}.
But truthfully there are a ton of Morons out there and they will buy anything - Canon knows that well. That’s why they milk the MK XXX on cameras, lenses, IS.
Perhaps Canon Customers should be smarter …

EL_PIC... with all due respect, you just reposted the same thing you did earlier. So, I'll ask again, from someone that uses a 60 mb back, I'm curious why you think more mpixels is a bad thing and what, in your opinion, did they neglect (customer needs).

Because I still have the same thoughts as I did when I bought the 5D.
In other words ...
When I went from 20D to 5D in '07 that was great - esp for wide angle vacation shots.
But to go from 5D to 5D MK II is way too mild for upgrade.
I will wait for the 5D MKIII with an improved AF or the elusive and desired 3D.
The FFDSLR and APS-C w/ L zooms is only for vacation and sexy girl fun !!
You might be confusing MFDSLR with DSLR.
They are very different and although both are cameras w some overlap ...
MFDSLR w primes only is for high heeled advertising clients and very large displays.

Still love my 5D and even though I still pack one in my bag it seldom get's used as the 5DMKII is, IMHO, a much better camera.

21mp vs 12mp ... I can crop a much bigger portion and still get a great 8x10 print

High ISO ... I've learned to not think twice about upping the ISO on the 5D2 when I'm shooting in not so great lighting or where a flash isn't allowed (dog shows, church) (maybe it's me but 5D wasn't bad but the 5DMKII seems better at even higher ISO)

HD video ... not for everyone and I thought I'd never use it but when something is happening and a video would be nice (my granddaughters!:) ) it is a great feature. Beats having to get out the video cam as I can still get still photos and switch back & forth as I feel!

Sensor clean ... Don't know why but it seemed I was always cleaning the sensors on my 5D's ... almost 5k shots on my 5DMKII and I haven't had to clean it once!

Having the 5DMKII, I was able to convert one of my 5D's to IR! :D

5D to 5DII is a mild upgrade, depending on the circumstances. It was substantial one for me. The extra stop of high ISO performance and extra cropability, when needed, extended what I could get in concert photography by quite a bit. If one occassionally shoots at high ISO, or never prints then the difference would far less important.
