i don't love either one of them either but i do prefer more light on the skin....i think kaptnkain's edit looks the best. at least the face isn't the same color as the background in that.

You guys are making the kid look ridiculously pale, if you've ever seen a kid before you know their complexion is much much warmer.

That is a little harsh. Considering it is my child, I do believe I have seen a kid before. She is a pale girl. Her mother (me) is pale as well. I agree that the eyes can be sharpened more but as far as her skin tone, it was done with a grey card and it looks rather close to her normal skin color by my screen. Granted it could use some warmth and then again my screen may be off and I am not really seeing it. kaptnkain, I appreciate your edit, I do and everyone has a different style of editing but please, be nice. We are all here to learn and learn to be better at what we have a passion for.

erinavery, its fun to play! trust me I do my fair share too!!! The first edit is a little too light and the 2nd was well for fun like you said. Nothing wrong with that! It may work on a pic that has a little bit of stuff in the bg but on this one it all just seems to blend.

thanks..i agree. i do a lot of soft color vintag-y style edits but agree that there should be more variation between skin tone and background. cute kid ya got there i bet you have fun taking shots of her. :)

Thats your take on it I guess. It could also be that your tastes are out of the mainstream.

Sorry! No disrespect intended, I was referring to the other edits which played with WB anyways. From a photography standpoint, while the original picture may be true to life, it has very little separation between subject and background. For whatever reason (lighting), the colors are very subdued and cool, and combined with the expression makes for a photograph with negative connotations - not something you want to associate with your beautiful daughter. However, if you adjust the picture to have warmer tones, and more saturation to bring out the colors in her shirt, hair, eyes, and complexion, that photo takes on a much happier, warmer feel.

Just my 2c.

Here is a before and after, this should help you. The only thing I couldn't capture in the screen cap was the light vignetting settings and some settings for the shadow toning.

Also, I cropped so that the subject was not centered, and the bit of pink on the bottom wasn't in the frame, nor the pink reflection on her shirt.

In PP I smoothed her skin ....

How did you smooth the skin?

You posted in Adobe RGB. Better to convert to sRGB for the web:

Overall, the image looks a bit dark to me, and the skin tones look a bit off -- perhaps slightly heavy on cyan and yellow. I played with it a bit.
(She is such a wonderful little subject. You are fortunate!)

Peano - how are able to tell this was Adobe RGB? My Exif viewer is not showing any data for this pic.

Thanks guys for your edits! They all look good and I appreciate that you all took your time to put them up. Sorry kaptnkain if I came off a bit over protective. I get a hair defensive sometimes when it comes to my kids. I do like your recent edit post. Thank you for taking the time to do that.

Peano, I thought I changed that setting... drat. I suppose I cannot see the difference in Firefox... For the smoothing I did an extremely light blur. I didn't think it was really noticeably between the pp and the unedited skin. But i know now not to do it! Lesson learned! Yes, I am very fortunate to have both my munchkins, even if it does take a little cartoon bribery to get her to hold still!
