Vandenberg is launching a Delta 4 rocket at 1:08 this afternoon. A friend is coming up to Ventura to shoot some video and asked me about local vantage points.

I'm thinking that I may as well join him and try to get some still photos. We'll just drive up to the top of one of the small foothills east of Ventura.

I have a 150-500mm Sigma OS lens, so my best guess is to use a tripod, leave OS on (because my cheap tripod setup moves a lot and the OS settles it down) and then go for a fast shutter speed, perhaps between 1,000 and 2,000th.

Since I'm going to be shooting into a clear blue sky with an afternoon sun, I'm wondering if I should increase the exposure to bring out some detail in the rocket. (If that's even possible - I have no idea!)

My very first time trying something like this, so I just hope to avoid the most obvious mistakes.

"A Delta 4-Heavy booster will carry a National Reconnaissance Office payload into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base's Space Launch Complex 6. The Delta 4-Heavy is a big machine, comparable in payload and size to the Titan 4. It uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as its propellant and oxidizer, respectively. This results in a relatively dim exhaust "flame", and a relatively transparent exhaust (essentially steam). "

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

I don't see a question in any of that, but good luck. With an NRO payload you might be lucky if they let you get anywhere near it with a camera.

We're not even going to try. Ventura is about 100 miles southeast of Vandenberg. :)

Anyway, here's what I ended up with; obviously too far away to get much detail through the haze of a coastal daytime launch. First I used an oil platform on the horizon to set manual focus, snapped a few, and then later switched to AF. Didn't seem to make much of a difference.

This photo was taken just before the first stage was released. Afterwards, I was able to follow the rocket in the air for quite some time until I overheard someone saying they couldn't see it anymore. As soon as I took my eye away from the viewfinder, I lost it and couldn't find it again!

It's too bad that you didn't have some warning so you could have caught it nearer the ground.

I really didn't know what to expect for a daytime launch. We saw the rocket when it first appeared over the hills to the north but I think this photo was taken pretty close to its nearest point on the southerly trajectory.

In hindsight, I wish I had driven an hour or two further north. As the crow (or rocket) flies we were about 80 miles away but with a little planning could have easily been somewhere between 8-20 miles away.
