Woke up early this morning to some seriously bright moonlight, creating a very cool effect with light reflecting off snow and shadows and silhouettes of dark trees. Grabbed my old A630 and tried to get a shot. Wondering what can be done to capture detail in moon without losing glowing wash of light over snow?

CP filter with gradient and a DSLR on a tripod?

Obviously shooting hand held with an old P&S is not optimal...:)

This is best I could do. Handheld; .8 secs; f/2.8; iso800. Did some noise reduction, which maybe helped a bit.

I may be totally wrong here, but I don't think what you want to do can be done without some PP. The moon will usually be properly exposed with just a 1/60th second shutter speed at around f/4 at ISO 100, or something similar to that. The rest of the landscape will probably require 10 to 20 seconds to record a decent exposure. When I shot film, I'd take a close-up of the moon, then use a double exposure and shoot the landscape. Got some neat results. Can't do that with digital, but it's not a difficult process in PS or Lightroom.

Props for gettin out of bed and taking the shot, though. I saw the same thing this morning, rolled over and went back to sleep.
