First off, Sorry if this has been asked a million times! I have tried searching.

I would like to get into Aviation Photography, It will be mainly at airshows with a few civilian plane shots here and there.

The question I wanted to ask is - What lens do I need? Not so much "need" but what will suffice for my requirements (Remember i'm still a newbie!)

I was looking at the 70-200 f/4.0L USM? Or should I go bigger?

Any input is welcome! I am here to learn ;)

Thanks

It depends on how close you can get. There are times a 50mm will work and there are times you need 400 or 500mm.

No "real" budget

I just want something to help me get started!

Thanks for the reply

Do you have a location you already shoot at. And are you shooting airshows or airliners at takeoff and landing?

I have a location at my local airport, but i've only used a point & shoot and took the pics through a fence (image below will show distance)

As for takeoff and landing.. It will be a bit of both depending one which way they are landing/taking off on that day

Thanks

well you look to be pretty close. You might be able to get away with a 28-135 or 70-300. What camera did you shoot this with? I can figure out the 35mm range with it and that will help narrow down the length you need.

It was a Sony DSC-W210

The question I wanted to ask is - What lens do I need?

If you can get close to an airplane, as happens with the ramp and static displays at an air show, you'll need a wide-angle lens, such as the Canon 18-55mm image stabilizer lens.

White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No (enforced)
Orientation: Normal
Color Space: sRGB

If the airplane is in the air, then you'll want the longest lens you can afford or carry. 400mm is a good starting point.

This air show image came from a Tokina 80-400mm lens. Others will want to start with a Canon 100-400mm lens. Longer lenses may be more useful, but they will certainly be very expensive.

What camera do you have?

If it's crop, the EFS 55-250 is worth a look

you're shot was at 35mm equivalent of 120mm...

assuming you're on a crop you'd need 75mm to get the same shot...but i imagine you want to get much closer...i think something in the lines of 70-300mm would probably work for where you are at...or 100-400mm since you said no budget

well your camera has a range of 30-120mm on a 35mm eq. So you will get much closer with a 70-300 for things a bit far there as it will give you 112-480mm but if you are looking to save some money for the range of the shot, you might be able to get away with the 28-135 giving you a max reach of 215mm.

The 70-200 f4 would work as well for your ranges. Now if the things are really far then a 400mm would really help out.

Yup, if you can get close a really short lens can help.

If you get the 70-200 f4 L non IS which the OP stated; then you can also get a 1.4 TC which will increase the length when needed and still allow you to auto focus. Not having IS is fine for moving subjects when you will be panning. Other experienced plane photographers may say different though; I am a newb myself :p
