At a close distance, you should select the AF point. +1. On a T1i and a 50mm, your DOF is 3" at 5 feet away. Move 1.5" front or back and your subject is already OOF. Not much room to play with unless youre using a tripod. Best to use selective AF points at narrow DOF's in my opinion.
