Pls let me know when you want to sell your 3530!

I actually only had the 3530lsv but I got the 1541t and 3541ls recently. I'm planning on selling the 3530lsv and keeping the other two.

I spent some quality time with a handful of Gitzos the other day.

Thanks for the recommendation. However I can't spend that much on a a set of legs + more on a head. I think I have come to a good middle choice though.

The Gitzo's I played with were about half or 3/4 the weight of Manfrotto's CF tripods. The Manfrotto CFs (055CXPro4 in particular) were significantly lighter than the 005XProB. The weight difference in the Gitzo and 055CX were on the upper end where the joints are.

Thanks to this thread, I have reached the middle ground of snagging a 055CXPro4 and 498RC2 ballhead. I like the lighter weight and more rigidness over the aluminum version. I cannot afford a Gitzo now, but maybe in the future when if I start using one more.

Before you buy have a look at the TRIOPO RS3 ball head. For lockup and rigidity it makes the manfrotto (and various other expensive) ball heads look pretty silly. It only has one lever - so no pan lock and no friction adjustment - but it's only 250 gram and Canon do not currently make anything to test it!
My 1D4 + 600F4 IS ( I think that's about the heaviest setup Canon currently make) can be supported at any angle when deliberately set up as far out of balance as I can make it. It locks up solidly with only a light touch of the locking lever. Even the Manfrotto Hydrostatic ballheads cannot compare.
Oh yes it's only £30 on E Bay!
PS. If you can't go Gitzo then the Carbon 55 is a nice piece of kit.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

OMG I didn't know av123 closed down...and a quick google search shows that the owner was indicted of fraud...how sad.

Given what I'd read about how he ran his business, I'm not surprised.

Around the time I bought my MFW, I thought they were going somewhere with all their nice products and low price. Oh well. Too bad he had to ruin it for everyone.

My (little) Gitzo family consists of a 3530 Systematic (for my 600mm) a 2531 (for general use) and a 3320BS for low level.

I am in the process of deciding on a new tripod, and have pretty much narrowed things to the GT2531 or the GT3541LS. While I own the EF 300 f/4 (non-IS) and 400 f/5.6, most of my shooting is with 200mm down to 17mm, plus my 180mm macro. By all reports, including Gitzo's specs, the GT2531 should handle the 300 f/4 just fine. I realize the the 3541LS can dampen perhaps twice the amount of vibration as the 2531, but given how light the 400 f/5.6 is, I would imagine I wouldn't run into too much trouble using the 400 f/5.6 (even with the 1.4x converter) on the 2531.

Based on your experience with the 2531 and 3530 (which I assume would be pretty comparable to the 3541), would you agree with my assumptions, or am I totally off base?

Best,

David

David, it's not just the weight / focal length to consider with a tripod. The conditons that one is shooting in is just as important. I've been on lenadscape workshops where a tripod was finr for studio or fair weather use. But failed misrably to stabilise even a 24-70 in windy / harsh weather...and lets face it, that's where all the landscape fun is at!
My Gitzo GT3541LS with spikes and markins M20 head have stabilised in high winds, deep snow, soft mud, rain, hail , sea crashes....you name it. I've taken 20 second exposures with 1000mm lenses....it's an quite amazing
piece of kit!

Given the choice between a tripod with a center column and one without, I'd choose the one without since it's going to be much more rigid and stable - what you buy a tripod for. The 3541LS is a systematic, so if you find later that you need a center column for it just buy one and put it on! :)

Chris,

If you are serious please PM me.

I've PM'd you in regards to that 3530lsv.

I really like the idea of the 3541LS and your photos really help in deciding which to get. Thanks!

Yeah, I just replied to it but unfortunately it's already sold. I'm glad my pictures helped out. I need to update my picture since I lost one of my family members...
