Stacked converter series

Just for a change yesterday I shot exclusively with stacked 1.4x and 2x tc attached to a 300/2.8 on a 7D body (840mm) Some nice light meant that IQ was not too bad considering the amount of glass.

Roy, I would not have believed stacked TC's would give this level of IQ. Nice work! Thanks for sharing.

BTW, EXIF data shows 600mm - camera must not have been able to register the second TC being in the chain. In what order did you have the components mounted?

Hi Jim, you are right, when you stack Canon converters the Camera only sees the the converter nearest the lens (2x) therefore it thinks it is 600/5.6 but effectively 840/8. The big advantage is that you can get AF on a non 1 series body - but you do need good light and contrast. With Canon tc's you can only stack one way = Camera > 1.4x > 2x > lens.

Nicely done, Roy. It helps to have a great lens in front of those converters. Before acquiring the 500/4, I shot the 300/2.8 with converters all the time and was very happy with the results.

Having said all that, it still requires excellent technique. You obviously have it. Good work.

Thank you for the comment Harvey - I fear it is a lot more to do with the quality of the lens than the 'shooter'.

Amazing quality with stacked converters. Excellent sharpness and details.

Hi Roy,
Saw and commented on your pic on 500px and you mentioned that the MkIII TCs cannot be stacked without an extension tube trick - can you elaborate please? I purchased the EF100-400 last year and trying to work out the best way to get a bit longer without breaking any banks! With a 7D I appreciate the AF quits at f5.6.
