I'm thinking about selling my Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM and getting a Canon 300 IS f/4L. Just wondering if anyone who has used both can comment.

-Chris

Here is the Sigma, purchased from B&H on 8/24/2010. I might be open to offers but still unsure if I really want to let it go.

I have not used the sigma, but I just purchased the Canon 300. I am in love. It is not quite as fast keeping focus of action coming towards you as say the 70-200 but none the less, still a very high keeper rate. It is very sharp as well. The only daytime photo's I have so far are of wildlife.

I'm sold on the Canon 300 f/4, just put the Sigma on eBay (external link). I also plan to get the 70-200 f/4 IS. Seems like the only thing I'll be losing by getting rid of the Sigma is the range and not having to change lenses as often, but that really is not a concern to me. I do all types of shooting and the IS is the biggest factor for me changing lenses, I believe IQ for both the Sigma and Canon are excellent!

I note, with my sample of the Canon 300 F4 IS, that the IS is a bit clunky/noisy and only moderately effective compared to newer lenses. The AF is OK but for moving subjects (in my case Birds in flight) turning the IS off speeds it up quite a bit. F4 can be a bit limiting.
That's enough of the downside!
The upside is - it's small, it's light, the IQ is excellent (when you get the shot right!) and on my 1D4 you can do fairly vicious crops and get excellent A4 prints even A3 if you don't get too over enthusiastic when cropping.
It's not perfect, but in this price range it's a cracker. I am planning on a 300 F2.8 IS in the future, but I thinkk I will keep the F4 as well.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Well I still have the 100-300 and don't plan on making any changes till I sell that.

I was also looking at the 400 f5.6, since most motorsport shoots will be panning and it would work great for BIF. I also picked up a 70-200 2.8 mkii and from the looks it accepts TC's very well so with that I would have the 300 range covered.

Well, I'd say that the 70-200 II with a 1.4x would be every bit as good as the Siggy, but with IS too.
