Notice how the car is in focus but the grass that is closer to the camera and the buildings in the background are all blurry and out of focus. -- Ken

Contrary to popular belief the depth of field doesn't change a significant amount because you have to step back which reduces magnification and undoes the effect - so neither does the blurring of the background - but the size of the objects in the background increases and makes them less distracting.
