Buy a telephoto and stop it down. Thats the quick answer.

My guess was the DOF, but I might be wrong, in which case I digress....

Main difference is that he is shooting in a shady area with natural light so it's "soft" with no harsh shadows and no specular highlights, not a garage where you've got different colored lights and all of them are casting harsh shadows.

The longer lens makes it easier to have a narrow depth of field. Notice how the car is in focus but the grass that is closer to the camera and the buildings in the background are all blurry and out of focus.

It also gives a more "flat" perspective since you will be standing farther away from the car when you use it.

Telephoto compression is that look you get from telephotos where both the foreground and the background are OOF and you get that isolation effect.

The perspective effect. Contrary to popular belief the depth of field doesn't change a significant amount because you have to step back which reduces magnification and undoes the effect - so neither does the blurring of the background - but the size of the objects in the background increases and makes them less distracting.

The reason your photos don't look like the one you want to emulate is that you're using a wide angle (ish) lens close up in a small environment. And the poor lighting at the location is doing you no favours.
You need to find somewhere that you can stand a good distance back with a telephoto lens and have a long distance between the car and any objects in the background.

To piggy back with others have said, use a telephoto wide open ... AND take it from a low angle. The photo of the OP, looks as if the photographer was squatting or laying on the ground.

What lenses do you have? Use your longest focal length and an aperture that will give you just enough DOF for the size of the car, but nothing more. And +1 on the getting lower. I rarely take a shot from normal eye level.
