Hi!

I've just got my new G6 today and had lots of fun playing around with the unlimited possibilities. Much fun and much more then on my older G2 (which was also excelent, btw)

I want to buy an extra CF card and I am wondering if I should beware of some things.
Are some type's better than others?
Is there a difference in speed in different cards?
Are there other reasons to choose one or the other?

Maybe someone can point me to the right info?

Thanks, Hans

I've used the Sandisk for both my G2 and G6 (1gig. ) and other things like my PalmPilot, etc. Its been reliable so far! :)

Brands dont matter too much these days. Buy whatever fits your budget.

Try to get the fastest you can afford for the capacity you want. 40x I would think would be sufficient, 80x is pretty lightning fast. As far as quality goes, there isnt a noticable difference in any of the cards, but for speed, a normal person will notice the difference between a 40x card and an 80x.

The speed is limited by your camera for reading and writing while using it. Hooking it up to your computer to transfer the files is where the speed is worth the extra few bucks.

And also when you upgrade to a camera that can take advantage of the speed - eg. G5 to 350D.

G5, 30D, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Canon 70-200 f/4L, Kenko 1.4x and 420EX.

Hans,
You may check Bob Atkins Flash Cards Review:
http://www.bobatkins.com …t_flash_memory_cards.html (external link)
the introduction to CF cards from Rob Galbraith:
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007 (external link)
and the CompactFlash Performance tests
http://www.robgalbraith.com …ti_page.asp?cid=6007-7699 (external link)
The best result from the tests for Canon DSLR cameras give SanDisk Ultra, Ultra II and Extreme cards. So you may choose from SanDisk cards for any other Canon camera.
New CF cards from different vendors now vary from 40-45X speed for normal cards and 60-80X speed for the fastest cards. SanDisk Extreme III achives sequential 20MB/sec 133X speed.
You may need a fast card when you backup the card on your PSD (Portable Storage Device). With fastest cards the compact drive PD70X could backup 1 GB card in 1min 35sec which is quite convenient. The normal cards would require more time. The same is valid for CF card to computer transfer speed.

Greetings,
Roumen

Thanks for the replies.
I'll have a lot of reading to do, this weekend.
I hope there will still be some time left to take some photo's :)

One card supplier you don't hear too much about is Crucial Technologies, www.crucial.com (external link) . It's Micron's retail arm. Their prices are about as low as anybody's. I've had pretty good luck with a couple of their cards.

SanDisk Extreme III is the best, and is only $80 for the 1 gig if you shop around!
