I was thinking if you are already at 1600, with the light that LOOKS available, going to f8-f11 should work (without going too slow)? But like I said, I'm a noob. YMMV !

Thanks Grego.....I've still got a lot of work to do...I'm use to my old non USM 75-300 f4-5.6 canon cheapy-charlie and somewhat happy with the results..I thought it would be a lot more dramatic difference right away..I need to do some controlled shots from both to check what I'm gaining...

Peachman & Okiewan --- congrats. welcome to the club of satisfied sigma 70-200 owners.

at the longer focal lengths, the depth-of-field at f2.8 is so shallow that I generally leave the lens at f4, just to keep an entire face in focus. A long lens at f2.8 is very demandng. For low light stuff, I open it up. This lens loves my monopod (image stabilization for $30).

Unsharpen mask is your friend.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

So true.. but I will say that my "normal" sharpening actions used with most of my other lenses, are WAY too strong for everything I've shot so far with the 70-200. Example; I use CSPro to automate, even at it's lowest settings, it sharpens too much with this lens.

You have got to be kidding me... your second shot is wonderful. I am not sure what you are looking for but I don't see any sharpness issues there. Congradulations.

As far as what the pros use and why... duty cycle and MTF has everything to do with it. Unless you are cranking out hundreds of thousands of exposures.... it isn't relavent. Optically the lenses are close enough that the operator will make the difference, not the lens. Nothing wrong with buying the more expensive gear, but it is far from being required to get great shots. Cheers... and wonderfull first shots.
