Why are there so many threads pitting one camera against another?

X vs. X

In the end isn't it the photographer behind the camera?

Am I the only person here tired of these type threads????

Because a lot of folks aren't experienced enough to know what they want and need reinforcement that they are making the right decision.. I agree, it gets pretty annoying to see the same threads over and over and over and over and over..... sometimes by the same person thinking they might get a different response by wording the question differently. Oh well...it is what it is. :D

I make sure my mini-reviews are pitting X vs. Y, so mine are more interesting! ;) I would hate to compare a 7D against a 7D....

In all seriousness, the photographer makes the difference between an interesting photo and an uninteresting photo, however sometimes a person wants the best bang for the buck for what they are going to shoot, and that means they could really be interested in controlled situations, which camera performs better than another. Once you know what equipment you want for what you shoot, then you work on making the greatest difference in each photo, which usually comes to the gray matter behind the equipment.

I don't mind a good side by side comparison, but many of the "vs." threads become a "this camera is better" pissing match.

Most of the arguments are pretty pointless IMO

Ah gotcha, agree with you there, so many don't even try to do an even comparison, they pull web pages and disparate pictures from across the web to try to win their argument. That is where I draw the line, darn it!

Some people need to hear the encouragement from a user of one camera against another. I didn't post threads like that but reading people responses did help me to decide what body to get. Even the bigger review sites pit x vs y.
I do agree that there area lot though, sometimes too much but it's usually a good read

Because most people have a budget and they are interested to get the best overall set of things they can afford.

In the end isn't it the photographer behind the camera?

Nope. You are you. That's the one part of the picture we cannot change. So I can equip you with a pinhole camera and I can equip you with a 1D Mark IV. You will do better overall with the latter.

A thread about 'how would a great photographer with X compare to a complete idiot with Y' is not of use to anyone.

Indeed, and it's equally annoying when people dis Nikon without giving reasons for their opinion. I'm into Canon but pleased there's another forerunner to provide competition.

Brand X vs Brand Y sells cameras. It's human nature.

Most foreign cars are the same - Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Subaru - but brand differentiation sells things.

Not always--different genres have different requirements, and matching the strengths and weaknesses of respective bodies while staying in budget can be difficult.

When you watch the Superbowl the Canon shooters are running around with about $22,000 of gear--there's a reason they're not packing a powershot.

It's annoying, I'm trying to really not look at those threads this year. It will never end though.

Long as it gives you a picture, thats all that should really matter. I just bought a Nikon to go with my Canon, doesn't matter to me anymore.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.
