Great Location, great light, the birds were performing but I wasn't:(
Lots of soft photos and now trying to determine what went wrong (probably me) and save a few.
C&C welcome

Nice shot! It is so hard to shot birds far away in water, the AF is just as likely to focus on a wake or reflection, don't be to hard on your self!

A fine action shot! I also found it difficult to shoot birds in the water and was frustrated with my results but I'm learning from my mistakes. Keep at it, It takes a lot of practice.

Great action shot...don't be too hard on yourself, birds chasing each other in the water are often hard to focus on, even in Servo mode as the AF doesn't know whether to focus on the bird or the splashing water. All you can do is set an aperture to give you a reasonable DOF and hope you can get a shutter speed to capture the action - higher ISO helps.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

Nice shots. When shooting birds, you just have to take what they give you.

Just think of it as a learning experience. You'll do better next time. In the mean time: this is a nice capture.

I'd be dancinig too Western Grebe. You'll never catch those in Ohio. Well captured. For me quick moving water birds have to be handled at fast shutter. These guys on a synny day would get me to push it to 320,400 or faster. That would be handheld. Grebes move way too fast to mess with a pod.
