I am trying to buy my first lens. It's a new tamron lens, but i am confused with it's really long name.
I have been reading a lot but in same places i see it written in one way and in other i see it different, so i am kind of afraid to buy the wrong lens...

I am looking to buy this lens:
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD (external link) for a Canon 400D.
On ebay i found it with the name Tamron 28-75.. f/2.8 XR Di. The "LD" is missing. Are they the same lens?
Also, in some places, like on the Tamron website (external link) i see written it is a MACRO lens.

Ai, ai, ai... this is to much confusion for my beginner's head!!!
Thank you so much for your help!
=)

hmmm, one more little BEGINNER's question... :D

What about the Macro name on a lens.
Does it mean it is a "normal" lens + the ability to focus very close?
Or does it mean it is a lens completely intended for macro and not able to make other kinds of photos?

Ex: a 50mm macro lens. does it also work like a "normal" 50mm lens? Or is it ONLY for macro?

I am sorry for posting so basic questions. But believe me that i am grateful for any help you can give!
Thanks
=)

there are two versions of this lens.. and LD and non-LD version... based on FM descriptions

but i think theres only one version of this, just ask for a picture of the ring on the lens that shows the name of the lens, that should clarify which it is, or the box

Macro indeed means it has close focusing ability but can be used as a normal lens, one draw back is the focus range.. if it hunts in low light, it will take longer to go through the focus range.. but thats hardly a real issue

Macro is a bit of a silly thing on lenses like that...it's not really a true macro...just ignore that part ;)

the one i have is a LD and it can focus at 1.08' which is quite close, i love its ability to focus this close. its by no means 1:1 or a "macro" but it is nice to be able to get in tight on things. Good choice on lens BTW you will love it :)

I would recommend you get the Tamron 17-50 instead of the 28-75, it has better image quality, and is also f/2.8.

Good choice of all-around lens! I borrowed one from a friend, and I loved the range of this lens...its perfect for travelling.

The 28-75 also has great image quality, and is also F/2.8.

Most "macro" lenses from Sigma/Tamron are not true macro lenses. Even so, even those that are actually macro can still focus to infinity like other lenses, except for some very rare exceptions.

Hey, thanks for all your help! =)

As to the 17-50 vs 28-75, i think i will go for the 28-75. I think my next lens (yeah, dreams...) will be some wide angle so then i can kind of cover a bit more with them together.
And, anyway, i still got the kit's 18-55m...

Ah, and nice to know a bit more what "Macro" means in the lens name.
Thanks guys!

hmmm, some more doubts. :/
I went to check the price on Amazon and what i found is, AGAIN, different.
Now i find a lens called Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (external link).
And i thought it looked different. It has what i think is a Aperture Selection Ring.
So i went to check here (external link). In the first photo it also has the same Aperture ring but in the second (where there are 4 lenses) there is no such ring!!
What am i doing wrong?
Can it be a different version? Maybe a newer version of the lens?
Can it be just the other side of the lens?

Oh yeah, now i am lost again! :s

If it has an aperture ring then the particular photo isn't a Canon version, that's all.

ahhh, that would make sense. =)
But the lens quality should be the same, right?

There's only this one version with those letters. Some sellers get lazy and don't put all the letters after the lens name. Tamron is notorious for the longest lens names in the business. I have the 28-75mm, and it's an excellent lens. It lives on my 5dmkII. You won't be disappointed.

hey guys, thank you, you have been really good help.
Well, i have decided to buy the 28-75mm.

Now I have one other question.
Has any of you bought from B&H? I am wondering how does it go if i get a "bad copy" of the lens? Do you have any idea?
