Up to very recently I have been quite content with my small prime kit for the 5D MkI. I have a canon 85 f1.8 for portraits a sigma 50 f1.4 for walk around and a few nikkor manual focus primes and a zenitar fisheye if I need to go wide to very wide. This is my compact, high quality low light kit.

I also have a nikon d2h, tokina 12-24, nikkon 80-200 f2.8 and a flash for event work. The d2h 12-24 and sb600 play together nicely when flash is needed. The 8 fps and 80-200 work nice for sports and sequences.

In the last month I have made two purchases that have made me rethink my setup. I bought a sigma flash (for Canon) and a 30D (to give the 5D a break). Getting the 30D has made me realize 2 things. First, I don't need a 50 and 85mm lens since the 50 on the 30D would fill that role. Secondly, with the smaller viewfinder its pretty hard to manual focus the wide primes I do have.

So I am thinking of can consolidate my systems. IE sell off the D2h, zooms and flash. At best I could hope for around 1400 to play with and if I add the 85 f1.8 then I would be at around 1700.

To replace the nikon gear I would need two zooms. One to replace the 12-24 but I want it compatible with full frame and a 70-200 variant.

So far this is the best combo I can come up with

17-40 f4 and 70-200 f4 is (I've rented the 17-40 for a week and it gets here tomorrow)

I'd like to hear other options.

Oh and I do the occasional wedding, event and family photography. My wife is my second shooter so two cameras are a must.

Thanks in advance!
Dan

5D, 30D and some primes.

My only thought is I wouldnt let the 85 1.8 go. I you said you can dupicate that purpose with the 30d and the 50. But for the shots where you want to use the fast portrait prime I would want the extra quality of the 5D to go with it. I wouldnt lose the 5D/85 combo
