Saving to the Web

I use Digital Photo Professional ... I've not paid too much attention to the saving of my photo's for specific end products - like viewing on the web, printing, etc. I suppose I need to start saving for the right media.

When saving in DPP, lets say for example, I want to save to the web, I see nothing specific that indicates a "save to the web" function.

What specific settings would I use in DPP for saving to the web ?

900x600 pixels (or there about), jpg, quality 8 or whatever is needed to meet site requirements, sRGB, embed profile.

I would say, saving it as a JPG and embedding sRGB as the color profile. The rest is up to you.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Sometimes 'save for the web' also refers to stripping off the EXIF information about the shooting statistics of the photo.

Oh sooooooooo that is one way that people close off the juicy bits grrrr!
I like to see those stats. I always just use "Save As"
All my work is done in CS5 so I just resize my photo that I want to upload here because in my actions I have made an action for that purpose. Nice quick and easy.

Those 'juicy bits' give us many clues when diagnosing shooting issues with photos, and we wish that when people complain about issues that they would automatically make an effort to retain the EXIF data in the photo.

Sound like most folks left of the juicy bits of information. When one says "Just Save As" which I always do, what are some of the sub-set settings?

If you are saving for the Web using Save As then it's up to you to determing size, color space and quality settings. If you have a Web host for your photos you can take an approach that works well for your service -- some people upload high quality images to their host so that clients can buy, download, and print at good sizes, but many hosts work better for viewing. I normally resize my images to POTN size -- 1024 at the longest dimension, although sometimes I'll go a bit smaller, it depends on the image.

Quality is another variable. A high quality setting means a larger file size. If you have a paid Web host it likely has a way of dealing with this properly, but free hosting sites will typically compress images a lot which can make people pretty unhappy. You find what works for you.

POTN also has a file size restriction if you are attaching/uploading to here directly -- you have to play with your image size and quality settings to ensure your file size is within 150 Kb.

And, be sure that your image is in the sRGB color space when you are posting to the Web so that we will all see colors as well-balanced as possible. There will always be discrepencies between Web browsers and monitors, but it won't be so bad if we are sharing a "common" color space.

Of course, this is all about Web images -- preparing an image for print is another topic!
