I find the easiest way is the fences on the wing: -15's have two fences on each side, -17's have 3. I have seen some pics of early airplanes with no fences or one on each side - so there are some nuances here that I'm not aware of but it works 98% of the time.

Difference b/t 15 and 17: Easy way we remembered was that if you step out of the cockpit of a MIG 17 you step on the wing. Step out of a MIG 15 cockpit you hit the ground! Great pics of a great fighter.
