I suppose this is probably better for the market watch, but I just had to vent and hopefully help someone out.

I was just browsing the canon store refurbs like I do every once in a while and saw that they added the s95 now. When it's out of stock everywhere else, this says $320 for a refurb with warranty and, as a lot of you know, canon's refurbs are very good quality, usually like new.

I can't believe this, I just bought one full price! At least I didn't pay the mark-up that some of the stores are charging though. I almost even got a refurb s90 before, but decided I had to get the 95 right away or I'd regret it.

Hope someone gets to take advantage of this awesome deal...

Hey, that's fairly hot, assuming someone can't wait for a new one to go on sale :D

About $367 with shipping/tax for me, which is getting fairly close to MSRP of $399 for new. About $32 difference if you can find free shipping/no tax.

Canon refurbs are usually checked out carefully and brought to current specs. The only difference you'll see will be the generic packaging it may come in. Any standard accessories are also supplied.

I feel like I'm not sure if I made the right choice. I read some horror stories online and the warranty is only 90 days. I may just send it back and pay the $399 full price... I'm going on a cruise in 2 weeks and really need a replacement pocket camera for my busted SD870is when I don't want to carry my T2i around

You have a legitimate point about the warranty, but I wouldn't worry about the camera being any worse off than a new one. I would have tried the refurb s95, but I had already ordered a new one elsewhere before I saw this.
I do have a refurb T1i though, and it came in spotless condition, indistinguishable from new.

I got a refurbished G11 from Canon. It went back the next day with hot pixwls and some other issues. I felt that 90 was not warranty enough for me. I just ordered it from Amazon. I ordered it when it was on backorder at $369. I later cancelled to get the G11. So I called and asked if they could honor the price I originally bought it at. They said sure. So with one day shipping (I'm a Prime member) it was $373.xx.

Interesting to see folk trying to "save money" on the already dirt-cheap S95 price of $399.00, there...

Here in Sydney the RRP of the S95 is $599.00 - shop discount to $509.00.... They come with 12-months Canon Warranty - and you can buy more warranty time - clearly not Canon, as it's - quote the site "...These additional warranties are available in 1, 2, 3 or 4 years and cover all the same conditions as the manufacturers warranty...." - from $55.00 1 year more, $70.00 2 years more, up to $99.00 for 4 years extra.

So for an S95 with 3 years Warranty - $579.00... Which - at that price - is a lot to pay for a camera without a viewfinder (though they do make it clear on the site, there's none, with 'Viewfinder' firmly "X'd" out), only 3.8x zoom, and a "Fast Continuous" of 1.3fps.

When one could have an SX30 with same extended Warranty for "merely only" $619.00 - $40.00 more than the S95. (The SX30 RRP here is $649.00 - shop discount, $549.00. US price - $399.00 plus cash-back.)

But our sick-mad prices do apply to all brands - not just Canon, of course...

And no - the AUD isn't 72-US-cents, as it was when I paid $586.00 for a Canon SX10, here - it's within a couple of cents of USD parity... But our prices are nowhere near comparable...

Dave.

Yet another fine example of why I feel Amazon is the best reseller of all time!

I get your point, but FWIW personally I dont necessarily consider the SX30 to be a better camera... It has a smaller sensor and more megapixels which generally will result in a decrease in high ISO performance. Its also def not pocketable, which is why I chose the S95 over the G12.

I love amazon.I just ordered a new one frmo them. I'm going to return my order from Canon. I just don't want a refurb, I want something I am confident will work with a full warranty. For $40 more it makes me feel more comfortable.

Ben_r - No-no - I wasn't meaning that the SX30 is "better than" the S95 - they're totally different devices with very different uses.

But, for the price we pay for an S95 here - one might expect it to have more functions. But for the US price - it's likely acceptable.

For the Australian price of an S95 (so to say), in the US you can have a G12 - same sensor as the S95 - more zoom, a viewfinder, etc - but that's a different type / uses of camera again.

As for "too many pixels on a small sensor" - my Fuji HS10 stayed with 10Mpix on a 1/2.3" BSI-CMOS sensor - and what you say about low-light/high-ISO functions certainly applies - the HS10 has almost nil noise at 100-200 ISO, and very low at 400 and 800. ISO 1600 is quite usable - cleans up very nicely in PP using RAW.

If you really need to - ISO 3200 gets usable images - but needs more cleaning-up, and/or showing at a reduced display size. ISO 6400 exists - but is, ahhh..., a "bit hopeful" to be polite... That is - it's an "only if you had to".

But if you think - as I did - that 14Mpix on the SX30's 1/2.3" sensor won't do anything beneficial for low-light and general IQ (and it doesn't have RAW for PP cleanups) - you might "like" Fuji's new HS20 - due out in March...

As yet-another Fuji-ism (they aren't at all short of those - I do have an HS10...) - they're cramming 16Mpix on a 1/2.0" sensor.... That's 6.4mm x 4.8mm - a micro-hair's width larger than a 1/2.3" sensor.

The receptor density goes up 45% over the HS10's - more receptors, smaller receptors - crammed in closer together... Fuji "claims" that a new dual-processor setup will cope well with that.

As it still (like the HS10) - only has "Fine" as best JPEG save-quality - the JPEG processing and "noise-reduction" functions will at least be "interesting". Perhaps they expect HS20 users to shoot everything in RAW - and spend a lot of time with PP...

I'm not about to sprint out to trade up (??) - my HS10 for an HS20.....

I might take a look at the Canon SX40 - with 50x Zoom and MegaCinemaScope Video - with still 14Mpix - but on a nice new 1/1.7" sensor... If Canon can "innovate" how to shoehorn one into a Bridge Camera body... :D

Dave.
