It fell about a foot on to grass. Now it won't take a picture.
It will focus but nothing else happens.

is it insured? sounds like a trip to canon servicing is in order...

It is fate saying you need a nice new camera. Why fight fate?

If it was only a foot onto grass the camera should really withstand a little bump...

On that note though, I don't think it's something we can diagnose from afar.

i.e. as other people have said, a trip to Canon.

Sounds like you have dirt under the shutter button, did it contact the ground in this area ?

This might help,

Hope it works out for you. I know that I would be down in the dumps if it happened to me. Wish you the best, and hope you get her fixed.

Is the CF door shut properly, if it focuses then the shutter release 'sounds' ok (unless you're using back button focusing), have you tried removing and re-inserting the CF. Also pull all the batteries and let it sit a while to reset.
I dropped my 30D from a good two feet onto a dirt track and apart from a dink or two it was fine.

I have never had the dirty shutter button problem. I was actually depressing the shutter button to focus.
I have removed the cf card, battery and reset the camera. All failed.

depends on the insurance policy really. You'd certainly have to check the cost of repairs Vs. insurance excess (any any possible premium increase) Vs. cost of buying another 30D.

Have you tried switching the lens to manual focus?

I probably will not use insurance. I talked with Canon and the repair is going to be between $120-200. Not really worth messing with insurance.

I have tried manual focus. no dice.

Im very interested to hear what Canon have to say, not what you would expect from that level of camera.

well its at Canon now. Estimate is 200.
Not too bad. Has to happen sometime.
Thankfully I am a CPS member and get 30% off and 3 day turnaround. Oh, and the Canon facility is 10 minutes from my house.
