For those of you with a student ID card, two good deals this week at Staples.

CS5 Photoshop Extended, $169 on Sale
CS5 Design Premium (which includes Photoshop Extended) $349 on Sale

Plus, view the Staples ad Online, and you can print a 15% coupon, which does not appear to exclude these items.

That puts Photoshop to $143 and Design Premium to $296. Coupon is only good in-store.

Not sure how long this link to the coupon will work but if it breaks you can just go to Staples.com and view the weekly ad. First page of the ad has the printable coupon for In-Store use only.

So you can present your student/teacher ID at staples and get the student version and price?

I'm not sure how the Staples side of the deal works, but usually the retailers don't much care... it's in the activation through Adobe that you have to prove your eligibility. Last time I looked, that entailed faxing or emailing them proof (with an ID or something of that nature.)

Edit:

From http://www.adobe.com …tteacheredition/faq.html: (external link)

When do I have to provide proof of eligibility?

Proof of eligibility must be submitted to Adobe after purchase in order to receive a serial number and use your Adobe Student and Teacher Edition software. Explicit instructions on submitting your proof of eligibility will be included inside your Student and Teacher Edition box.

Yea, it's done through Adobe. I just did this with Lightroom 3. You have to fill out an online form and attach a jpeg scan of your ID. They get back pretty quick - within a couple of days...

How it works is you buy the product. Inside the box is a activation code. This is not your serial number. You go to an adobe website, and you enter your activation code. You then submit evidence of student/teacher status. The simplest form is a picture ID. It must be valid.
Some colleges issue new ID cards when they expire. Some just put a sticker on the ID for each semester/year that you remain an active student. Adobe examines your evidence and if they determine it is valid, they issue you a serial number.

Stickers are easy to make. It is also easy to register at various colleges as a "non-degree seeking student". Its up to you and your morality as to which route to take. I will be a non-degree seeking graduate student at the university where I did my undergrad. They let past students register easily as a grad student, just to take classes for fun. Some people just make a sticker with the current semester/year (Winter 2011) and put it over the expiration on the card. Might be legal, might not be.

If you acquire the software with legitimate evidence of active student status, you are able to continue using the software both for personal and commercial purposes forever. If you can get a student ID you can easily make up the cost of the software just through side jobs in Illustrator and InDesign.
